This was a struggle. Ultimately I think I have to conclude this bottle has a low level TCA taint. That flaw doesn't seem to have flattened the wine completely which is why I've struggled with it. Just hints and flecks. The one thing I can say is that overnight the wine did seem quite more open thought the tannin remained somewhat clamped. The structure seems quite good and the cherry and lava rocks notes I've been able to coax out of it are intriguing. In any case, the wine could certainly use some air now and more time in the cellar will likely benefit it greatly.

Pretty tasty now - maybe it’s too early, but we really enjoyed it. Nice smoke and savory notes, great balance. Not a shy wine, but not overpowering or monolithic either.

Thought this was excellent. Nose is earth and flowers, lovely nose. Black fruit, spices, minerals on palate. Elegant but with enough punch as you’d expect from the grape.

Plum and camphor on the nose. On the palate, black cherry, plum, and notes of ash and earthy spice on the medium to long finish, with strong tannins and strong acidity. This was a good to very good value at under $50.

My bottle mirrors Krassen’s more than the first note on this wine. I quite likes it but it was quite a beast, austere and unyielding. Probably closed. Very Italian with It’s own character, not just a copy of Sangiovese or Nebbiolo.

Retail $60. 100% Aglianico. I could perhaps count the number of wines from Taurasi that have passed my lips on two hands (with the help of a foot or two), but I doubt I have tasted a better iteration than the one before me now. Don't get me wrong. When I opened this 2016 on a Zoom call with Piero Mastroberardino, the tenth (?!) generation winemaker at the estate, I thought aloud that I was committing infanticide. Piero assured me that it would be OK, and he was right, this wine is magnificent. Rich red and dark fruit, rich, dark earth, black truffle, cedar. Whoa. This is one of those wines that I could smell for days but the palate might even be better: balanced fruit, zingy acidity, and a depth that I did not expect from a Taurasi this young. Whoa. While I have had more than a handful of fantastic Italian wines during the pandemic, this might rule the roost. Outstanding. thedrunkencyclist.com

Seemed less full bodied than most Aglianico.

4th Saturday Group Cellar Diminishment (Sue’s): Red berry fruit, a bit vegetal too. Cherry and red fruit on the palate. Soft tannin. (NS)

Delicious now. Likely will be spectacular in ten or fifteen years.

Way too young now, fruit has not come together sufficiently.
