My third bottle of this vintage. Feels like it's starting to enter its tunnel, compared to the previous two bottles, needs a bit more time before balancing. Fine and dry tannins, the fruit is just right, cranberries, red cherries, tobacco, leather and roses. Wonderful minerality, and a long finish. Will last for many more years.

Late night at home. Pop and pour. Drank in Conterno Sensory. Appearance is clear, pale intensity, ruby colour. Legs. Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of furry pink peach skin, strawberry, red cherry, red pomegranate, dusty stones and earth, bit of floral rose. Developing. On the palate, dry, high acidity, high alcohol (14.5%), fine but still good grip high tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of sweet red pomegranate, ripe red cherries, strawberry, dusty tarred road, lots of sour red cherries with air. Long grippy and structured finish. Very good quality. Excellent QPR! These young Barolo are drinking so well young nowadays.

From half bottle. Not as funny as I expected it to be. You want to rent a classic 911 to have fun and get the keys for an electric driven one. A good bottle, very fine structure but lacking the character i was recently enjoying with Vietti (especially Casti 16 and Tre Vigne 20) Would wait.

Univinum wine fair (@EDEKA Ueltzhöfer, Heilbronn, Germany): Glass: Red Wine *** brief notes for my own memory from tasting sip. No rating *** Completely closed down, very dense, monster tannin, beautiful structure and complexity, needs time. Only concern is, that the tannin will dry out. We will see. 92+

Did not give this bottle the attention it deserved.
Typical perfume, quite pretty. Serious structure and depth, very well balanced. While stalwart, also quite reticent. It seemed to be locked down. Based on this experience, recommend holding bottles for three to five years, or longer.
From half botte. Not very experienced with barolo, but I could tell there was a lot going on here. Definitely needs a decant, and did not open up with time in the glass. Would love to try some with age on it.
Opened the night before. Colour is translucent ruby red with a garnet rim, good viscosity showing its structure. Quite austere nose at the beginning with blueberries compote, sour cherries, raspberries, baking spices, dried apricots, violets. Developing in the glass, maple syroup, licorice, damp earth, roasted coffee, tar, blood orange. Complex and pure. On the palate has a great concentration, blue and red fruits, orange peel, cinnamon, with a medium acidity, a nice minerality and some initially massive tannins that gained more smoothness with some time. Full bodied and long finish, this Castiglione has an overall silky mouthfeel and is very lush on the palate. I think this is starting to enter in its drinking window, considering '17 to be a very dry and hot year in Langhe. Beautifully crafted "entry level" Barolo, i would suggest a decant before tasting, and i think this will drink beautifully for a decade from now. Perfect if you want a ready to drink, complex Barolo with a great q/pr. 14.5% abv.

Room temp. High heat. Pretty enjoyable wine light, but fruits well rounded. Delicious to drink. Pretty good. (Not sipped from a wine glass so that may have changed things)

Not decanted. 37,5 cl bottle. Young (as expected). High acidity and slight heat. Not a bad wine, but I can not give a higher rating for it. 88 pts. Maybe time will help.

Vietti's Castiglione Barolo 2017 is one of the better Barolo I have drunk from this vintage. Incredibly fine and dry tannins, the fruit is just right, cranberries, red cherries, tobacco, leather and roses. Wonderful minerality, and a long finish. Will last for many more years.
Spectacular Barolo! Expressive and pure bouquet, all that Barolo should impart, including sweet and crunchy red berries, pomegranate, rose petals, savory herbs, hibiscus and raspberry leaf teas, and tar.
Bold yet sublime attack. Massively gripping middle, fully ripe, gracing the entire palate. Balanced acid and powerful tannin at the back. The finish commands attention and lingers a long, pleasant while. The whole package. It should age just short of forever.
The wine held form over all three days, and showed best on the second and third.
I will look for more and drink a bottle alongside the '16 vintage. Until then, difficult to determine a quality difference. High QPR! 95-96.

Thats a very good base Barolo. Like blending trediberri and Cogno cascina nuovo. Very satisfying, and showing complexity in terms of alternating nuances on palate. Drink or hold, lots of fun atm. 90/91.

Recommend at least 30 mins open time and really enhanced with food especially salt heavy. 2017 was a very warm vintage that makes this more approachable early and dynamic layers of complexity

palate wise: pomegranate, warm baking spices, assertive spicy tannins, dried red roses, modest acidity, dried herbs. Nothing wowing here but this was very classic barolo. Opened with a decanter and stayed pretty level after an hour

Tasted at Terroir Renaissance today. Still very young and tight, but the perfumed red roses, red cherry and tea notes already shine. What I love is there is an elegance behind the powerful tannin structure. Like this over Sandrone Aleste 2014.

From a 375ml. Medium bodied, and surprisingly light color (no one will be referring to this as “inky dark”). Dynamite in the flavor department though - with cherry/berry, and smooth tannins.

Vietti really makes amazing wines, their Castiglione is no exception. My first 2017 from Piedmont, wonderful tannins that mix perfectly with the fruit, cherries, raspberries, roses, herbs. A young wine that will get even better with time. Drink or hold.

Popped and poured and had from Zalto Burgundy glass. Intensely floral with plume, cherry and hints of spice. Good acidity and surprisingly subdued and well-integrated tannins for its age. Continued good fruit profile that aged gracefully to day three. While good on day one having it sit in a bottle for two days improved the experience (despite the tannins coming out a little more). Have to buy more of this one

Showing plenty already. It has engaging florals and perfectly ripe berry and cherry fruits. It is plump and fleshy, drawing in to a chalky close and persisting with pleasant savoury flavours.

The '17 Castiglione is a beautiful young wine and continues the streak of me being pleasantly surprised by this vintage. I was impressed by the aromatics in particular, which are very Vietti-Ravera like. On the nose, I found very ripe dark red cherry fruit, orange peel, fresh roses, chalk, menthol, and peppery spices. On the palate, the wine was medium to light in body with less concentration and a shorter finish than I'd like, but with a much more approachable tannin profile than I expected to find in '17. The fruit profile on the palate was a bit less fresh and more clenched than the wide-open aromatics, as I found dried rose, red cherry, orange peel, and a touch of leather.
The '17 Castiglione is the first entry level wine I've tasted from the vintage, but has some of the same characteristics I've been finding in the higher end wines. The aromatics are quite classic in expression, with a bit more ripeness and immediacy than normal, but in an attractive way. However, the palate doesn't live up the aromatics and is lighter and more diluted than normal. The tannins are not of the same quality as vintages like '16, but are subdued enough to make the wines quite drinkable.

Tasted PnP in preparation for a tasting. The glass was just a tiny Spiegelau taster glass.
The nose offers mature scents of dried fruits, prunes, dried apricots, dark cherries, acetone and leather polish. On the palate it's fresher than expected, and very elegant. The tannins are certainly present, but not clenching.
This is a terrific Barolo, and one that is already approachable. I wouldn't decant it at all, just PnP. I'm sure it also has the stuffing to last another 10-15 years.

High acidity and alcohol (14.5%). Needs 30 minutes to decant.
Color: Ruby
Nose: Ripe cherry, touch of grass, anise.
Body: Surprisingly light. Well structured, but a little thin.
Palate: Rich, but acidic. High tannins. Leather, dark cacao, dried fruit.
Finish: Tight but lingering.
Amazing with a NY strip. Plays well with the fat/tannins.
Needs a few years in the cellar.
Rating based on the fact that it's drinking young.
