Beef blood, beef stock, iodine, leather, meat, licorice, blackberries, blueberries, violets. Great length. Drinking beautifully now, but has years to burn. Drink over next 5 to 7 year IMO. 98

Warm, wonderful big wine with a real depth of damson fruit, along with hedegrow, leather, warm earth and roast game. Slight mushroom initially. The structure is soft, this is now and easy drinking wine that slips down easily. Long and complex. Drink now, don't leave any longer.

Decanted. Little sediment. Dark violet. Floral, fresh plum, spice, pencil shavings. Well integrated tannins and good acidic lift. Spellbinding afternotes. Surprisingly youthful. Many years ahead of it.

From the land down under - Q4 Wine Club (The Apt): Wine #12: Again a wine that was a very nice mix of fruit and herbs which created a nice complexity. At times there were hints of sweetness to it and at times it was more on the savory side. Very well pulled together and a wine that you wanted to follow for awhile in the glass to see how it goes. (11 pennies)

Elegant and developed nose with blackberries as well as some red berries, liquorice and some black pepper, animal notes (abattoir and blood - in a very pleasant way), and hints of undergrowth. Medium+ body with blackberries and some red berries on the palate, fine acidity, gravelly mineral notes together with some mint, tannins that have mostly softened, just a bit of alcoholic bite. Drinks well now, comes across as fully developed but will keep for several more years. 92 p.
Very much Northern Rhône-styled in its flavours, and even a Burgundian Nortern Rhône wine at that, with only the slight alcoholic feeling indicating that we might be elsewhere in the world.

Decanted. Clear medium ruby-garnet red. Vegetal, meaty, savory bouquet with notes of shoe polish, stewed fruit, soy sauce. Slightly better on palate but overall not a great showing. Possibly heat damaged bottle? After seeing other notes for this wine I will call this bottle flawed.

91 pts

This is lighter, less extracted than much ozzy Shiraz. There's a red current note as well as the usual bramble. Complex and long. Wouldn't expect it to improve now at peak.

Nose seems at once focused and ancient: scents of dusty bookshelf and red capsicum, with hints of red chili pepper, rosemary, parsley, bay leaf, and pomegranate. Palate is smooth, with strong flavour but not much tannin. Flavours of red cherry, blackcurrant, saffron, rosemary, and eucalyptus.

Powerful aromas with notes of ripe plums and dark chocolate. Lovely length and complexity on the palate, the fruit is lush and sweet with a rich texture but not overbearing; held in check by good grip from the fine tannins. Dense chocolate and prominent eucalyptus flavour on the palate and a lush toasty, creamy mocha filled finish. Plenty of time left with these.

I have had the pleasure of drinking a few bottles of Edelstone. This was the best, the 2000 is drinking right now. I decanted for an hour before drinking and it was worth it. Blackcurrant on the nose and on the palate with a long, long finish. I enjoyed mine with Indian food but I'd drink it with anything really or even on its own... Probably best with lamb or duck though. If you have one drink it now!

Decanted 30min; a shorter decant may be sufficient (some sediment is present). Fully mature - lovely now. As intense as you'd expect from an old-vine Shiraz. See previous reviewer's notes for details (biggsy is spot on). Henschke's place is secure in my favourite new world producer list. Will certainly consider getting a case of a more recent vintage. Wondering whether it is approaching the end of the drinking window. Having said that, the bottle may not be typical of a well-kept case (got it on a bin end sale; cork was dry and crumbled; had to filter it).

Deep garnet, light at the rim. Vibrant, intense nose with aromas of blackcurrant, eucalyptus, cedar and coffee with a lovely delicate fir tree fragrance. Powerful but velvety smooth with blackberry fruit, dark chocolate, liquorice, cloves and a little spicy black pepper at the back of the throat. Long lingering mulberry flavour. Superb.

Tucker Seabrook trade tasting (Redfern): Choc-cherry-berry flavours. Plenty of fruit here, not evidently unripe, but the palate is lightweight and generally unimpressive. A tough vintage – no Hill of Grace this year; Edelstone is a much bigger vineyard, but I reckon they had to heavily triage fruit to get even this modest effort. Pass.

NobleRottersSydney - South Aust trip (2) Barossa (Henschke/Penfolds/Seppelt/Magill): 3 barrel samples made up the previous day showing effects of different trellising (control v Vertical Shoot Positioning v Scott-Henry). Will spend another 12-18 months in barrel. In fact, it was very hard to detect differences between Control/VSP. The S-H was a little spicier on the nose. The wine smells of raw raspberries, plums & oak and is very crimson-red, not at all like the colour in the bottle upon release. The S-H wine is maybe a little more rounded on the palate, with greater intensity. All had very soft tannins, but of course are still unfinished. About half of MtE vineyard is S-H these days.

Acker Auction & Commanderie des Costes du Rhone (Zuma & Racines): This is just lovely. Red fruits and spice and good tannin. It's still quite young - has many years left - but very tasty right now.
