The 50 Big Bash (Harry's NYC): A bit unfair as I had high hopes for this wine and I'd say it was a good old Bordeaux but not really a knock your socks off. It's got the age and old leather and maybe if you start to look for it a background of fruit. Not quite as vibrant as some of the other bottles. From this bottle it seems we should be drinking our wine soon.

Still holding up well. Pop and pour, touch musty at the beginnng but still holding onto a bit of fruit and an enjoyable green pepper acidity along with a wonderfully soft texture mouthfeel. As always with wines this age, all about getting lucky with a well stored bottle.

The oldest VCC that I have tried thus far. Great floral nose, definitely a bit better than the palate. Lean but not thin wine. Still had a decently long finish and just a touch of fruit left. Could have shown more tertiary notes at this stage. I think probably a little past it's prime but still fun to try.

The 1970 Vieux Chateau Certan shows the smoky side of Merlot with loam and aged leather notes. The berry fruit is starting to flag on the nose but still present and with an appealing sweetness, too. The palate shows less fruit and more treacle tart, tweed, and leather notes. Drink these now and enjoy them while they still have their particular charm.

Nose: Clay, Plum, Red Cherry and smokey herb. Some brown spices and treacle / tea notes showing the age of the wine through the fruit. Palate: Fully resolved, soft and delivering a sweet dark berry fruit with leather, fur, clay and a nice patina. Finish: Fading, but enjoyable. Drink these now.

Little sediment. Clear. The colour is amazing. No way you would think this 70s. Black fruits on nose. Lean and green. The brilliance of bordeaux how these wines can survive c50 years. Shared with KT for his birthday

Maderized and worrisome out of the bottle; after an hour and then to two hours, wow; clay with sweet and sour raisen and blackberry; secondary notes that maturity brings with a memorable complex finish.

Second Sunday Group: Chateau Latour vertical (Frank's (hosted by Marty)): Courtesy of NG, popped and poured. Cherry and red currant notes- plenty of fruit remaining on the nose and palate. I tend to find Pomerols too ripe but that's not the case here- not sure if that's the age or had always been the case with this wine. Lingering finish; nice balance.

Initially funky nose of tobacco and bell pepper, which became more elegant over time with underwood, earth, leather. On the palate some greenness, leather, gods acidity, some fruit left. Nice.

Much better than expected with VCC herbs jumping out of the glass, some underwood, earth. On the palate initially some damp cloth but this went away quickly, so really enjoyable.

Noticed that the cork fell into the bottle. I decided to bring it by my local wine shop to open it up and share it with the people I knew there.
On the nose I got minty notes along with brown sugar, cedar and a rather interesting green banana peel sweet scent. The palate I thought wasn't as great as the nose. I got tea, iron/rust, a vegetal component and some underlying faint red berry flavors. Still had some drying tannins and nice acidity that held the wine together.

Dark color. Lovely nose of an old well-cared-for leather book. Silken structure with beguiling sweetness. Plummy fruits. Held for the couple hrs it took to finish. Lovely wime and very à point.

Rock dust and mushroom on the nose; raspberries and mineral on the palate along with a fairly dominant sour cherry note. Nice and restrained and still quite young, but the sour, acidic quality detracts from the overal enjoyment.

Wonderful, intense cigar box & cassis nose that really sang from the glass. Palate less impressive. Rather short finish and dry after an hour. Much better after two hours where it took on a delicious soury cranberry / cassis quality. Incredibly light and ethereal palate. Lacked depth and persistency for a higher score, but still delicious.

Not as good as some other bottles that I have had. Already quite high in acidity yet sappy and full, some underwood, damp earth. Nice.

I like old VCCs a lot. Damp earth, underwood, licorice, tobacco. Not quite as good as th 1971 but still pretty good.

VA city. At first it smelled almost port-like, then some weird watermelon aromas, and then pure nail polish. Too bad.
