  • A bit weaker than a bottle last year (rated 93 pts) as it was not as clean (some cellar stink which never fully went away), a bit less sweetness and concentration. Still, this was again an convincing performance from what is not really a good vintage. 89/90

TN: At first a bit cellar stink with time a bit purer but never totally clean. Lots of minerality, herbs and earthy notes, wet forest floor, some tobacco and subtle sweetness underneath. A bit of concentration missing but the aromas are fairly well delinated. Good tension and creaminess. Medium length.

Decanting: Not decanted. It needed time to open up and get rid of the slightly moldy, cellar stink aromas

  • Second bottle of this in a year. Double-decanted. Tobacco, smoke and dry earth dominate the aroma profile, but incredibly there was even a bit of fruit present. Naturally thin on the palate in terms of texture with tannin on balance a bit too dry still. But overall pretty decent aromatic intensity.

  • Tasted double blind. No notes taken. This was quite a surprise as everybody guessed this too be much younger (my guess was 50/60s Bdx). Despite not being from a particularly good vintage, this wine was not only alive but it showed beautiful. Full of life, good tension and concentration, nice expressive fruit core, good sweetness, and all the tertiary aromas. Not highly complex and medium precision only but still a very nice wine and fun to drink. 93/94 pts.

  • Bordeaux 2016 5-years on: A bit of leather, forest floor, more red type of berry fruit. Coal, leather and smoke. Quite thin on the palate, but still very ok in terms of balance and sufficient fruit left. The intensity and precision is out of this world for a 100 (nearly) year old wine.
