  • Excellent balance, already showing some complexity.

Cooler fruited for this bottling. Floral with tar, violets more than rose, and some Giacosa like hard candy notes. Midweigthed and beautifully balanced. this is a less powerful, but really well balanced bottle of Brunate. Cooler fruit with more Ricola than classic balsam medicinal notes. Thi swine has s sense of poise and lift. It reminds me a little bit texturally of the lift of some of the best '14s. Finishes long. Not a pwoerhouse, but really well done with a sense fo mystery and freshness.

  • La Festa del Barolo 2023 (The Pool, NYC): The 2018 Barolo Brunate is hauntingly dark and floral, with spicy red and black fruits complemented by a hint of dried blood orange. This is silky-smooth and energetic, with vivid black cherry and exotic spice motivated by stimulating acidity. It finishes with incredible length, leaving a coating of fine-grained tannins, along with violet and rose tones that slowly fade. The 2018 Brunate is a beautiful expression of the vintage, which should drink well relatively young. Frankly, it’s hard to put the glass down.

  • La Festa del Barolo: Masterclass (and burgers) (The Pool/Grill): To be fair the problem with not blind tasting is this is a wine that I predicted could be one of the best of the tasting (it was up in the top group although not the winner). 85% Brunate and 15% Le Coste so while the label has changed it’s actually still the blend of always (perhaps a bit more Brunate and a bit less Le Coste). Interestingly enough it’s the Brunate vineyard from the Barolo side rather than La Morra. Very fruit fresh, black cherries, plum, lighter bodied in style. Drinks nicely.

  • La Festa del Barolo 2023: The '18 Brunate is one of the better 2018s, showing a lot of the signatures I get in this wine, but a bit diluted and a bit more savory than typical.

I found roasted meat, leather, blue fruit tones, and a bit of citrus peel on the nose, which was more savory and less fruit-forward than the more powerful vintages, while showing the same blue fruit and leather notes I often get in these wines. On the palate, it was medium to light in body but with a ton of energy, with blueish fruit, raw meat, and exotic floral tones. It's very finessed with well integrated tannins and high acidity. The finish is short, but typical Giuseppe Rinaldi Brunate, ending with sweet dark red hard candy fruit, leather, and roasted meat tones.

One takeaway from seeing all these wines side by side is that the Giuseppe Rinaldi Brunate was lighter in color than most of the wines in this tasting.

  • The '18 Brunate is among the top wines I've had in '18, a vintage I have not been a fan of overall. It comes across to me as a smaller scale, somewhat more savory version of Rinaldi's Brunate, but still has the beautiful sweetness of fruit I found lacking in some '18s.

On the nose, I found sweet dark red plum fruit, a hint of purple / blue sweet hard candy fruits, sweet red roses, and roasted meats. On the palate, the wine is medium to light in body and super finessed with minimal tannins, medium to high acidity. The texture of the wine is such that it's drinking very well today. I found red plum fruit, smoked meat, sweet roses again on the palate, with the wine ending a bit more savory with smoked meats, sweet spices, dried roses, licorice, and herbal tones.

  • The 'Brunate' is more stern and shows not all of its layers openly yet. Big thrust, largely build structure. Pretty balsamic core with a red/blueish touch and more aromas of spice and tobacco. Sublime.

  • Ballistic Barbaresco and Barolo Tasting (PNV): Violets, tar, pine, five spice and graphite. Intense and deep structure on the palate, but shows a class and lift from the floral fruit that gives you belief that it is going to be quite a show stopper with a mdoerate amount of time in the bottle.

  • A tad more tense compared to ‘Tre Tine’ and clearly darker and more balsamic. The fruit seems coolish, with just the right amount of zest and aromas of tobacco, balsam, mint, dark stone fruit and blue flowers. Broad and with an expansive dimension. Outstanding potential.
