  • again, after 4 years this Nerello is stil fantastic, multi-dimemensional with dry dark cherries, raspberries; at the palate. Bold and juicy and elegant at the same time, persistent. Smoke and spices. Tannic still. Mouthfilling with great personality. Stunning. Don't wait too long at this point

  • Dinner with Ray (Beouf, Telok Ayer): Back on form and absolutely lovely. The nose ebbed and flowed and evolved in the glass, but at its peak, it was absolutely alluring, with perfumed clouds of rose petals and violets, wild herbs and cracked black pepper, all floating around a deep core of black cherries and dark berries, and then a lovely whiff or Etna’s volcanic soil running behind. What a bouquet. The palate was really lovely too - juicy and clear, yet with enough body and structure to stand up to an onglet; this unfolded in beautiful layers black cherries, dark berries and sweet plums, all infused with lovely bits of pepper, garrigue, even lavender. Couched in a lovely structure of chewy tannins and juicy acidity, it then pulled away into a lovely finish, with a beautiful trail of volcanic mineral pulling away into a full, effortless back-palate. Really delicious - this was a lovely mix of fruit and floral, structure and mineral. Absolutely delicious now, but it will still improve with time. I am a little worried given the state of the last bottle, but these should really be given 2-3 years more.

  • Flat and untasty - this felt a bit heat-damaged. Sad.

  • Dinner with Ray (Casa Esperanza): Really pleasing, although it has its best days way ahead of it yet. I loved the nose on this - it was tight at first, but opened up beautifully to show complex aromas of dried cherries and red berries, dusty earth and orange peel, all with lovely dusting of dried brush herbs - lime dried verbana and oregano. The palate still needed a lot of time yet, but there were seeds of something really special here. On the night, it showed lovely, lively notes of dark cherries and cassis seasoned with lovely touches of orange peel, dried lemons and brush herbs. Delicious stuff, and so nicely structured too - with powdery tannins and juicy, lemony acidity forming a nice backdrop to that lovely panoply of Sicilian flavours. Lovely finish too, with a nice lilt of dried herbs and spices. This needs time yet. Even tonight, it needed a couple of hours in bottle - it is such a lovely characterful wine though, and will only get begger. I will keep my other bottles away for another 5-6 years at least.

  • fantastic nerello mascalese, Franchetti at the top. Multi-dimemensional with dry dark cherries, raspberries; at the palate persistent, cranberry, wild strawberry, coats with tannin. Smoke and spices. Bold and thick somehow but extremely elegant at the same time. Mouthfilling with great personality. Stunning. Will fly higher with time

  • The consensus wine of the night at a tasting that each person brought a wine that best represented what they personally loved. A quintessential Sicilian wine from Mount Etna. See through dark ruby, elegant, great clarity of flavors, and savory without being heavy or overpowering. But what most made this higher end wine of Passopisciaro be the top rated wine is how it evolved in the glass and moved through layers of flavors, much like the routine of an Olympic ice skater that flows through swan like dances punctuated with breath taking leaps, spins, and curves.

  • delicate, this is great stuff, insane high level, slightly reminiscent of Burgundy with the same transparent color scent and taste, some of the best you'll get from Secilia

  • Tuesday Night Double Blind $40+ (Alpharetta, GA): See through crimson with lighter rim; deep cherry, raspberry, liqueur like fruit, redwood, rose water, slight brimstone; sweet cherry liqueur on the palate, persistent, cranberry, wild strawberry, coats with tannin, higher alcohol which could have been toned down if served a bit cooler; reminds me of Sangiovese a little bit with youthful sweet fruit and floral notes; very young but very good.

  • Tuesday Night Double Blind Tasting, $40+ (Bin 75): Light color, nose was pretty muted, almost inert. On the palate though, plenty of red fruit, but still tannin. Wasn't Nebbiolo tannin, but everything said Italian. That meant Nerello, and I was the only one at the table to call it as such. Love these wines, this one will be great with a little more time.

  • I much preferred this to the Rampante bottling. This was denser and almost a bit cloudy (needs to stand upright and benefits from decanting), with lovely clearness noticable in all Etna reds. More tanin evident - needed much more air, after which showed lots more sweet red fruit (esp strawberry). Needed more breadth and persistance to score higher. I would hold off here until 2020 and it should drink to 2030. 92-93pts.

  • Soft red cherry, light earth and wonderful floral notes on the nose, becoming more aromatic and floral the longer the wine is open. Medium bodied and almost perfectly smooth, more like a spectacular Cote de Nuits than a mix of pinot noir/Barolo or brunello. Red cherry and red raspberry upfront than were both bright, but soften and deepen with time. Lots of mineral notes throughout along with nicely balancing acidity. Very good length of the finish with more mineral notes, floral qualities and deeper redfruit notes. Drinking so well now, it will be hard to resist and probably near peak, but I suspect it should stay at this level for several more years. (Ristorante L’Incontro; Taormina, Sicily)

  • VinItaly Day 2 (Verona, Italy): 800m; larger paler rim; strong strawberry, orange, brimstone, deeper nose; more medium body, medium tannin, more elegant overall than the Chiappemacine; great.

  • Ruby color of medium depth.
Interesting nose with juicy cherry fruit.
Palate is still tannic and needs time integrate.
A little bitter on the finish.
Give it at least a couple of years in the cellar before opening.
