  • Nebbiolo at the Goldberg's

A lovely youthful and deep nose. Violet, mountain herbs, darker nebbiolo fruit, citrus, nettles, iron, and cured meats. A ton going on really. It's structured and powerful, yet delivered with finesse. Ferrous, savory and meaty on the palate. Deep and long, yet graceful. I really like how this bottling contrasts with the Brunate and Tre Tine bottlings. Youthfully delicious and a special treat. This is coming together really well. I under appreciated this in April of last year. Bravo! Thanks MB!

  • Bring a Great Nebbiolo (Chez Goldberg, Greenwich Village, NYC): [Double-decanted around 6:30pm.] Lovely fragrance of violets and red fruit. Gorgeous and expansive in the mouth. This fits right in with all the 2019s I tasted this morning. Plenty of structure for the long haul, but such elegance and perfume now. 96-98.

Soleil et fraicheur, richesse spherique et tension, quel equilibre, quelle pureté!

  • Piemonte: Truffles instead of Turkey; 11/23/2023-12/2/2023 (Barolo, Barbaresco, Alto Piemonte and of course Alba): The first vintage of this wine for Rinaldi and probably good timing as they have recently had to replant the Brunate vintage so in a few years there will be a gap where they will be back to just the two wines. Previous ownership managed the vineyard well but Marta did note that they are making changes that you can see a bit in the 2019 but perhaps more so in the later vintages. I noticed the coolness of the wine here more than the others which seems to balance out an underlying richness in the wine. More muscular. Lots of pepper. More tannin. It opened up some as we swirled (to be fair this is in maybe 5 mins as the tasting went quite quickly). There was a note of almost a red fruited liquor at the end for me. Interesting wine and another that would be fun to see the longer term evolution.

  • At the winery. Tasted already from barrel, this was the first time from the bottle. Clearly different from the other two Baroli by this producer, which is good. From barrel I always got the impression that from the point of view of power and assertiveness, this was higher than the other two, overcoming the Brunate, which had always the character of a powerful and earthy wine. This one pushes power and earthy flavors even further and deeper, towards a ferrous note. Now from the bottle this has gained a lot more nuances, particularly on the nose which showed surprising complexity and finesse, even with floral elements. The power is there, but is clearly under control. All in all a wonderful surprise and a worthy addition to an already fantastic portfolio.

  • Since my first cask sample back in 2020, Rinaldis brand new addition - and third (official) Barolo in their line up - has captivated me: Bussia 2019. From the 'sottana' subzone, where the Rinaldis own 2 parcels, planted with Nebbiolo (Barolo, Langhe) and Dolcetto.

The Bussia 2019 shines with heaps of Rinaldi DNA, but at the same time it doesn't hide its origin, out of the sisters home base in Barolo. It's a youthfully austere wine, possessing a stern tannic spine and a tart berry fruit, with dark red & blue shades. The structure is chiseled, strong and holds all the layers that grow and broaden in the glass. It opens up with linear thrust and muscle and expands in directions on the gracious mid palate. A very distinct attribute here is the lingering spicyness that melds beautifully with the young fruit and vivid aromas of blackberry, crushed stones, iron, violets, black hard candy and herbal pastille. A hint of freshly cut mint leaf provides extra lift and energy. This is a drop-dead gorgeous premiere. Kudos Marta & Carlotta!

  • Visit to Giuseppe Rinaldi; 4/13/2023-4/18/2023: Brief tasting at the winery. The ‘19 Bussia is the “biggest” wine at Rinaldi in 2019, showing a darker flavor profile than the Tre Tine and Brunate and also a slightly less finessed texture. On one hand it clearly fits into the lineup, but on the other hand it brings something new, so it seems they have handled this first vintage well.

On the nose, I found dark red plum and black fruit tones, sweet spices, licorice, and balsamic. On the palate, the Bussia is more full bodied than the Tre Tine or Brunate, and has slightly more aggressive tannins. Dark plum fruit, sweet spices, and mint flow across the palate with a ton of energy, but on the back end I still find the sort of super sweet hard candy like fruit i associate with rinaldi.

I would assume this has the most upside for aging of the three Barolo.

  • With Carlotta

The most overtly structured of the Baroli. Savory with nettles, mountain herbs, licorice, and deep cool fruit. Structured, yet again not coming across as heavy. Midweighted and beautifully balanced on the plate with more nettles, herbal, balsamic, citric, and savory notes. There is a lot going on here. Excellent focus and clarity. Firmer tannins and a little coarser. I love that they are getting fruit from a new source and I love that it speaks of its terroir. 94++

  • Giuseppe Rinaldi Barolo Bussia 2019.
