This is your grandmother's chardonnay. The wine smells of popcorn, butter and rubber along with yellow apple and pear. The palate it is much the same as well, but with medium-low acidity. This is the typical buttery chardonnay character that people either love or hate. I typically like it when it is done well, but I think in this case there is a little too much manipulation going on for me to score it any higher.

Vineyard planted in 1976. No new oak. Medium plus nose shows butterscotch, vanilla wafer, golden apple, candied spice. Palate gives similar fruit but surprising acidity for CA style. Very cool climate region shows through, deep citrus layers, riper tones are more muted and gives balance. Really nice style and value.

Beautiful work here, this is well-crafted barrel-aged Chardonnay with personality and balance. Fruity and lactic, no sign of new oak, but the integrated oxidative character seems to clearly indicate oak (I've been fooled before, serve your friends some Bongran if you want to fool them...). Rich texture, layers of fruit, orchard and tropical, rather pithy and grippy, deep acid line to keep its weight in check, quite distinct stony/mineral line too. Nice stuff, and if you like to age Chardonnay, this should be worth following at least a few years.

I was a little nervous since the 2017 is so flabby and dull. This has the same tropical fruit up front but also has good energy and lift. Nice!

Casual Saturday Tastings (Northern Chicago 'burbs): Stand up tasting. Floral nose is quite enticing. Palate is richer and less exciting with moderate brightness. Still fun, and very good value.
