This is now starting to show a little aged funk around the edges while retaining its core of densely packed fruit. In fact it's denser than I remember it ever being. The fruit still has plenty of youthful sweetness in the middle but around the edges it's more of a patina of dehydrated blackberry and blueberry skins with some smoky, gravely elements. And it is demonstrating pretty well what makes 2005 so great, in that it's just starting to show aged complexity but also fresher and richer than many of the vintages that followed.

Medium ruby. Subdued palate. The bright sour cherry acidity palate profile takes over the balance somewhat, and the overall sense is that this is awkwardly austere, lacking freshness and body. Tannins still in evidence but are very fine and add some interesting complexity - mineral skein backdrop and a moderately long final.
Got the feeling this was too tight and perhaps too early but for some reason only had a single bottle of this.

Excellent Pinot Noir, precise and focused. Perhaps not as immediately fragrant as the last bottles, but still in a very good place at the moment, freshness seemingly intact after all this bottle age. Drink or hold for a couple more years, but I would not expect further evolution. Delicious!

Fresh as the proverbial daisy still, red cherry here underpinned by real structure. Opened and poured at cellar temperature, much swishing for around 20 minutes and then the first sip - really nice. A proper bargain from the Wine Society and a decent price too. Not the most beguiling pinot noir I have ever had, but it ticked the boxes for the evening. Drink dates on CT are conservative if you have a bottle of good provenance, this felt like it would keep until 2025.

16 years on: still fresh. Doesn’t feel faded. Raspberry then cherry light tannins. Light oak. A little leather and earth. Rather short on the finish Great value for money from The Wine Society (UK). Needs to be served cool ~ 15C to get best out of the bottle (it’s a lot flatter at 20C).

Did not feel 16 years old at all, far from it. Keep 2-3 more years if you want to (excellent provenance on the one I opened). Beautiful wine, perhaps a small amount of roughness around the edges, but time has softened this to a lovely place.

Still features the dense fruit of the vintage, perhaps showing even more richness than it did on release if my note from then is any indication. The crushed rock element is also at least as bold as it's ever been with some intensely powdery tannins to go along with it. I'd give this at least a few more years for that to smooth out though it may take even longer before any aged character comes out. This still feels pretty young.

This wine has moved into a very nice place - lovely balance built around signature Pernand earthiness and density. An unusually satisfying mouthful with dark-ish red fruit, demonstrative but not assertive tannins, and sufficient body to pair with red meat. The ample finish features a streak of sharp acidity that's unusual in a Burgundy, but works interestingly as a counterpoint to the pithy tannins. I suppose this wine may possibly continue to improve, but, for me, it's open season on my remaining bottles. Really very good.

Much like the January bottle; needs some air time to relax and show its best, retains a streak or assertive acidity that is less charming than I recalled, but not grossly disruptive. I think these are for relatively near-term drinking. Good value at near $30; these days, not so much.

Good and approachable, with a background note of typical Pernand-Vergelesses earthiness. Maybe a bit on the young side, still, and best drunk cool, emphasizing its delicious, tart acidity.

Sous bois, pomegranate, shriveled cherry; relatively light bodied, well-structured, smooth, some elegance and even a touch of the ethereal, but a little vapid and simple, without all that much flavor or depth but still in fact quite good

With roast chicken - spicy, earthy cherry flavors are bolstered by medium body. Quite tasty. Despite modest tannins, I suspect this can last a bit. Seems like it's barely in secondary maturity.

Drinking well. This was pretty bold and fruit forward compared to a 1999 Jadot Lavieres burg we opened the same night. We preferred the other one, but this was also good.

My last bottle, but could have gone on for quite a while. No sign of degradation, in fact very lively. Perfumed pinot noir nose of light alcohol, floral bouquet. The palate is delicate on the start and has very good fruit structure which passes into a delicious tart finish. Good balance, and has a spicy edge.

If you concentrate very hard, there's a bit of stony fruit, a hint of pinot fragrance, but it's so faint. Perhaps aeration or further ageing will bring this out, but doubt I can be bothered.

From a bottle provided to our tasting group by D.B., this medium ruby/red wine was tasted in single-blind fashion. Red cherry, clove, coriander and cocoa aromas and flavors reside in a medium-bodied, tart and slightly astringent frame. The alcohol (listed as 13.5%) throws some heat (even at an appropriate serving temperature) and the edgy tannins dominate the middle palate as well as the medium-length finish. I doubt that this one will get better, but it should at least provide a moderate amount of pleasure over the next five years. Drink now-2020.

Becoming approachable. The wine's texture is much, much more open-knit and plump than in its early years. Ample tannins, but not excessive or intrusive. Bit of Pernand hauteur and gout de terroir. Aromatics were such as to perfume the air several feet away, yet flavors and aromatics in the mouth were muted. Excellent wine, but probably showing better in another few years.

Red center, pale red rim with some signs of age. Pleasant nose of raspberries and bing cherries with a backing of wet slate. Dry up front, lean tart cherries, touch of burnt sugar, slightly toasted, good acid and tannin still (too much for the fruit), drops of fast on the finish. Disappointing compared to the previous bottle. Maybe left too long, doesn't seem to have the fruit to stand up to the acid at this point.

Red Burgundies - Louis vs. Louis: Nice earthy cherries on the nose, but that was just a tease. The palate was tart and thin and the finish was was only medium in length.

Deepish red center, red rim with modest signs of age. Sweet, briar, tobacco, strawberries, redcurrant jam. Smooth, redcurrants, acidity, tannin, subtle finish with unripe strawberries and tomatoes. Very good, might need a year or two.

On opening, thin with modest fruit flavor, though more than a year ago. Flavors grow with air time, underpinned by a distinct layer of fine grainy tannins. Second day, the wine continues to open, becoming pretty good, especially considering its youth. A red Burgundy of relative finesse, balanced, modest in proportion, pretty good. Too young, naturally.

This is in a much better state than my last bottle from over a year ago. With an hour of air, this is very open and pleasurable. Great nose of dark red fruits and sweet alcohol. Very smooth palate with tart cherries galore. Nice spicy component and some burnt sugar give this a very interesting flavor profile. The oak which I remember from last time appears to be well integrated. The acidity is a bit sharp at first, but calms down faster... Even a couple of minutes after my last sip I can still taste the tart cherries... Still primary and not super complex, but a great drink... I am on a good streak of finding approachable 2005s and I am getting even more excited about the vintage. This is great for the $30 I paid.

Burgundy Corner (Wine Exchange - Orange, CA): Pure red purple throughout with wonderful aromas of raspberry, flowers, and herbs. The palate is high toned with red fruit and good minerality. This seems significantly closed on the palate so give it time. 88+

Meaty with a lot of acidic tannins and a sweetness at the core. Broad with rubber, earth, and a long finish. Solid, more muscular than delicate. For Burgundy, this seems a good value. B/B-

This was ready to drink right out of the bottle - a rarety for 2005 burgs at this point. Nice silky texture, soft tannins and nice sharp acidity. Good cherry fruit with some grapefruit and cotton candy on the finish. Nice toasty oak to begin with (a tad too much for me), but integrated nicely with time and was not as obvious on the 2nd day. 89-91, but I will rate it at the top of the range for being a very solid value and being ready to drink.

Drank this without decanting and the wine was initially tight and not giving much on the nose. It opened with some nice light fruit and then revealed layers of lilac and spice on the nose. It has a smooth coating on the palate and was an old-world style without that in your face fruit of many Cali Pinots.

Stunning value in 2005 Burgundy built for true rockheads. This wine presents itself in two phases, with the first hour showing some overt woodspice and thinner fruit. Then its true personality emerges, with the fruit gaining in richness, gloss, and vivid berry flavor, and an intense rock-quarry scent taking over the aromatics and giving the wine the gritty mineral taste of a mouthful of pulverized gravel.
