Translucent ruby red color. A bit maderized on the nose. Sharp and unpleasant on the palate, strawberry, brown sugar. Sharp tannins, harsh acidity, out of balance. Finishes short and unpleasant. Well past peak. No score, not fair at this point.

Time to work on the aging Archery Summit collection; this one came to hand out of the "cellar." I have never read poetry written about the 2006 vintage in the Willamette compared with several other vaunted vintages, that seem to occur almost annually these days. This example suggests that it is holding up well. Very clear ruby red, maybe just a little fading at the rim; somewhat muted aroma of dark fruits and a little smoky spice; initially on the palate quite complex with earthy, mineral, spicy notes, that resolved over time into bright, rich cherry. Almost zero residual tannin (contrast with younger versions), a very clean, smooth, long finish. For sure this is good; but then I have to note that this is up the top end of my price point, so it really ought to deliver.

Textbook example of well-aged Oregon Pinot Noir from a top-shelf producer, among the best in the region. Shows potential for another 3-5 years, but probably drinking at the peak right now. Richly dark in fruit and flavor, well-integrated and finishing quite long. Gentle tannins in the background, and hints of smoke throughout.

Every ASW wine I have now days is a huge disappointment. This wine is hot, plumby, pruney, flabby and weak. Almost suffering from VA, but lacking finish of any kind, other than a stringent bite in the back and just dank, musty and lame, especially for the price. The old ones from the early to mid nineties have so much more character and depth. These wines have been designed for instant gratification, they age like fine fish. '06 is one of the worst Oregon vintages in my opinion, but ASW isn't what it was in the Gary Andrus days. This wine is so over the hill, it's going up the next one with crutches.

Much of the heavy brett-funk has blown off. Showing stewed fruit, chewy black cherries, game meats and earth. Still leans towards the sweet and simple side with much softer edges yet still hot. The 2006 vintage is my least favorite for OR PN, these were easy to spot due to the heat. 84 points, 6/3/2012 New Ranking #6

ORIGIN: Arcus, meaning ‘bow’ in Latin, describes our estate vineyard that wraps around both sides of a small valley in the heart of the Dundee Hills. Capturing the distinctive terroir of this single vineyard, the 2005 Arcus Estate rewards Pinot Noir devotees with an expansive nose, compelling mid-palate, elegant finish and a superior expression of the varietal.
VINEYARD: The vines at Arcus Estate are planted on steep slopes that complicate farming, but consistently produce intensely flavored, rich fruit. This wine was made from plantings of self-rooted Pommard clones blended with Dijon clones 777, 667 and 115 grown on south, southeast and west facing slopes. The grapes at Arcus Estate were hand harvested between September 16 and October 2, 2006, based on each block’s optimal physiological ripeness.
WINEMAKING: Fermentation for the 2006 Arcus Estate was conducted in both stainless steel and wooden open top fermentors, utilizing an average of 3% whole clusters. The fruit was hand sorted and soaked cold for an average of 5 to 8 days, after which native yeast fermentation was allowed to proceed under temperature controlled conditions. During primary fermentation, tanks were manually punched down two times per day. After limited post fermentation maceration, the wine was sent via gravity to 79% new French oak Francois Freres, Damy and Tonnellerie Rosseau barrels where it aged in our caves for 11 months prior to bottling.
TASTING NOTES: The 2006 Arcus Estate opens with intense floral and fruit aromas of violet and rose petal, fresh black cherry and red currant. The palate is generous, confectionary and concentrated with notes of black cherries and raspberries, star anise and mulling spices. Saturated with fruit on the palate, this wine shows great depth and succulence with plush, integrated tannins and persisting notes of floral spice and fresh berries. Expressive and concentrated, this wine is open and vibrant now, however it may improve with proper cellaring over the next 3 to 8 years.

This wine has a nose of red fruit and earth. A big wine with flavors of strawberry, raspberry, earth and a peppery spice that came out after about twenty minutes in the glass. This wine was lovely to just sip on before dinner, but equally good against a steak. The fruit, acid and tannins are well balanced, this is a nicely complete and layered wine.

Aromas of Cranberry, Cherry, Cherry Blossom, Oak, Earth, Rose Flavors of Cranberry, Raspberry, Cherry, Cola, perfect amount of oak for me. Some Earth - This tasted ... like Oregon! So much going on. Aromas filled the room upon opening. Nice long cherry-cola finish, a little hot, but it was fine. Really hit its stride around 2.5 hours of decanting and it was a real treat. 96+

The first 20 minutes were great...dark cherries, dark fruit with hints of spice. Very good balance and integrated tannins. All you would want from an Arcus. At 30 minutes things started changing. Fruit, with cherries dominating, remained, but the beautiful complexity just seem to fade away. We waited to see if anything woudl change but by hour 5 it was basically still the same. It was OK, but not the beauty we enjoyed at first. Bummer...

Very disappointing. By some of the notes written I'm hopeful this is just an off bottle as I have two more remaining. Nose was very closed off and then after about two hours gave a nice floral scent. That was about all. Nothing but a thin sour cherry with a short bitter finish.

Huge fruity pinot with red berries and spice on the generous nose. Baked raspberry pie on the palate with lots of white pepper and some baking spice. Finish has that nice earthy mushroom Oregon thing going on. My only complaint is that there isn't enough acid to balance the huge fruit, making the wine seem a little flabby. We all enjoyed it and I can't imagine why WS gave this such a low rating.

Dundee Hills Passport Tour (Dundee Hills AVA, OR): Arcus. Need I say more? And from the 2006 vintage, one of my favorites. Typically their longest-lived wine, this is still drinking like a baby. Sweet black cherry, with earth, oak notes, and a creaminess that is quite interesting. Served in the winery's tasting room, which was clogged with people.

Again my experience with Arcus is different from other "pro" tasters. This 06 is lighter than most of the big 06's but in a good way. Very burgandian, suttle fruit, does not hit you alongside the face. This is an old world pinot noir. I am surprised that Archery Summit was able to produce such a delicate wine in such a big year. But that being said I enjoyed it.

Very nice big new world Oregon Pinot. I don't know where WS got their 83 points but it was not from this barrel. tI decanted it for two hours before dinner at club, had it with a wonderful hanger steak. Smooth, light tannins, good fruit and a tasty wine. Burgandian purists may not like it but I think it was a great wine tonight, glad I have a few left.

Popped the cork and decanted for 30 min. before first taste - this was the 3rd bottle of the night - one was pre-dinner, a CC Reserve Cab first half of dinner then this wine. Dinner was grilled pork tenderloin, roasted potatoes and asparagus. The Arcus was tight at first but showing great potential. Very dark, not your typical Pinot. After an hour the nose of dark berries, cherries and spice really came out. The mouthfeel was a little light but the taste was powerful and well structured. this is definitely the best Pinot I have ever had - but I am sure it would have been better if I had been a little more patient. 91 +_

As a long time Archery Summit drinker, and a big Arcus fan, this was a massive dissappointment. The wine was not corked or spoiled but it was acidic and very bitter. Completely undrinkable. Chicago Pinot Days-2008 (Navy Pier, Chicago IL): nose: really good depth with rich plum tones, dark cherries, loads of florals, and some zesty pine tones. Really well balanced on the nose, and not as overbearing as I would expect, and not as candied as other 06s have been for me
taste: Not as heavy as I would've expected with well defined and rich flavors of plums, dark cherries, pine tones, and tart raspberries hiding underneath
overall: Almost what you would expect from a wine of this pedigree, but it leaves a bit lacking. A bit thin on the mid palate and overall. Still it posseses good structure with nice medium acidity

Oregon: Dundee Hills Extravaganza (Hollywood Wine & Espresso, Portland OR): Wine of the Tasting! But, of course I expected this. At $100/bottle, definitely a pass for me, but this is a HUGE Pinot! Heavy tannins, oakey, but with big fruit under the tannins that shines through. This one is very very young, and needs a good 5-10 years to really show its stuff.
