2005 Hogue Cellars Merlot Genesis

  • "Genesis" is a clever name for the wines honoring the original plantings of Hogue Cellars in 1974. This Merlot is bargain priced between $10 to $15, even for currant vintages. Aging well at 12 years old, it remains opaque with no brown tone and still has a brightly fruity black cherry aroma. The mouth entry is well rounded, integrated, smoothly tannic, refreshingly acidic, and softly caressing. While not in the top tier of lush, rich, and powerful Merlots , it definitely remains a tasty and enjoyable introduction to the Hogue wines.

  • Rich fruit on the nose. Ok. A little hollow on the mid palate. Nice finish. Solid.

  • Popped and poured with dinner, finished off the next evening. Dark chocolate, black cherries, and a little cola on the nose. Same on the palate, with a bit of spice and vanilla woodiness coming out on day 2. Well-balanced, with firm tannins and decent acidity. Enjoyable, but a little short. Demoted a point because my wife didn't like it as well as I did.

  • the Globe in your Glass (Pan Pacific Hotel): Good Nose, little Earthy Light Fruit, Acid is good level, tanins and a nice finish lingers a bit a good QPR

  • Popped and poured on New Years Eve as an alternative for some “drop-by” friends who wouldn’t have fully appreciated the "special bottles" I was decanting, and who tend to prefer a simple, approachable wine. Aromatics come through as black cherry jam on toast with some fairly innocuous earth and floral notes. On the palate, the tannins and oak are present, but not assertive. Currant and red/black fruit come through, with a short to medium finish that featured cherry, vanilla and a hint of pumpkin pie. Enjoyable for what it is, it doesn’t attempt to overreach…this wine seemed confident in it’s own skin, comfortable being a tasty and inexpensive Washington Merlot. A good choice for cheese and salami plates, as well as basic meals of casseroles or grilled meats.

  • I've had 03' 04' and 05' all are good, but I give the slight nod to 03'. 05' is close, but 03' had a better nose, otherwise very similar on the palate. Awesome juice for the price, easily competes with merlot's twice the price. A rich layer of jammy black currant on the palate, yummy!!

  • What a nice merlot ... notwithstanding the Pinot movie we all have seen! We have found most Washingtonian merlots to be a little bigger than your typical CA types, so this one did not disappoint us. Darker fruit on the nose and palate and ample tannins so that it doesn't wimp out on bigger dishes. I would give this a definite 'thumbs up!"

  • Pretty, transparent red-purple color. Blue and purple fruit on the nose (especially blueberries) with a hint of spice; rich, bright blue and purple fruit flavors (blueberries again), a little vanilla, and cherries dominating the midpalate and carrying through into a long, long finish; smooth but firm tannins. Great balance and structure, delicious, and such a great QPR. The Genesis merlot is solid, year in - year out.

  • Clear dark red colour. Bright red fruits and spices on the nose. More cherry, raspberry and spices follow on the palate with grainy tannins and a long finish. Very nice.
