Dinner at Antonio’s. My experience with Portuguese wines is extremely limited, particularly so for whites. Made from indigenous Portuguese white grape varieties (4 different types in the blend), this reminds me of white Burgundy. Soft buttery notes with the slightest hint of oak. Light bodied, elegant and well balanced with enough acidity. An enjoyable wine overall and makes me keen to try more Portuguese wines.

Monthly Tasting Group HWS #126; Portugal (By AW and @ AW): The bouquet is a bit reductive, but there are flowers, white fruits and oak as well. On the palate beautiful fresh acidity, white fruits like gooseberry, minerals, nuts, herbs and spices like clove. The wine is a bit fat and has pleasant bitterness in the finish. Special wine.

UWS (@ JB): Bouquet with melon and strangely enough some strawberry as well. On the palate minerals, good citrus, oak bitterness and some reductive impressions. Maybe this doesn’t sound too good, but it is certainly a very ok wine. Have one more bottle and I will probably drink it this or next year, so there will be a final follow up.

ProWein, Day 3 (Duesseldorf, Germany): (Barrel sample) 5,000 bottles, to be bottled in Apr '08. Delicious, open-knit, with only the slightest signs of its barrel fermentation. Zingy lemon and braeburn notes, full-bodied, and only slightly creamy mid-palate. Just an exuberant wine throughout. Easily one of the best Douro white wines I've ever tasted. 94.

Monthly Tasting Group HWS #040; Portugal. (By importer OK): Complex bouquet. Also in the taste. Exclusive oak and good citrus and apple fruit behind it. It will be interesting to see how this ages.
