2018 Villa d’Este Wine Symposium – Kelly, RJ, Justin and Kevin's excellent adventure; 11/7/2018-11/11/2018 (Villa D’este, Lake Como): Remarkably intense and complex nose displaying deeply toned concentrated pure black fruit, lovely sous bois, a hint of soy and black truffle, grilled cep, Vosne spice, Chinese medicine and earth. Perfectly integrated palate, nicely concentrated pure black fruit, remarkably dense yet silky and polished, perfect amount of acidity and mineral, no noticeable tannins and a long concentrated black fruit driven finish with Chinese medicine and soy at the end. It shows more concentrated fruit than the 80s but not as clean and precise. This has reached the secondary peak. If cellared properly, this can easily last a few more decades but will not improve.

opened just before serving, without decanting. Unfortunately served too warm by the sommelier. Madeira-like, very savory, nutty, with some desiccated coconut.

RSV 71 - its beautiful how the RSV ages gracefully with an amazing bouquet of dried roses, oxidated fruits on the nose, good spices. The palate is fine, delicate, with an incredible integrity in the palate, good roundness with this oxidized fruits

Wow. I was not disappointed. Always a bit nervous when pulling the corks on these older wines. The cork was soaked, black. But we scored a hit. Totally tertiary with beautiful autumnal notes. Great depth and mid palate. Rich, complex, nice fruit and a long, long sweet finish.

Great Dinner Wines (Healesville Victoria): brilliant wine. Only slightly overshadowed by the brilliance of two wines of a lifetime. This was singing! A beautifully mature Marey Monge with elegance, grace and no lack of substance. Still got a few years left in it but drinks beautifully now so why wait any longer?

A (Mostly) Burgundy Dinner after HDH Burgundy Auction (Naha - Chicago IL): Marey-Monge label of course. From magnum with a well depressed cork, but it had a firm seal. Fill ~5-6 cm. Served blind. Charming old Burg, but nobody in the group correctly identified this as Vosne-Romanee. Great earth aromas and flavors more prominent than the remaining black and red fruit. Modest spice. Good textures and finesse, but I found it more interesting than exciting. Held up well over the course of several hours.

Taken to a fine restaurant to enjoy with lunch on a day off work. As my friend Henry says, "with old burgundy there are no great vintages, only great bottles". This was a very good bottle. Clearly old with a very strong brown rim, it maintained some fruit with very good length.

This bottle was in particularly good nick. Lovely sappy, spicy, floral lift coupled with some beef stock and sous bois development. Gentle, lacy and vinous in the mouth with a refined, savoury closure.

A little too much oxidation here to be pleasurable.

Quite mature, yet still displaying big dry fruit and dark soil notes. Dry leaves and browning on the edges of the palate. Drink now. 91-92

Browning somewhat on the edges, this offered a nice combination of fading fruit, soft exotic spice, and dusty soil notes. 92-
