Silky and elegant on the palate, the wine seems picked at maturity and the juice unfolds a whole palette of aromas of leather, sweet spices and cedar. Complex and classy, it glides by itself with disconcerting ease, of great intensity, with a very nice balance where the acidity is at the service of the wine to give it energy and liveliness. Beautiful powdery and earthy finish at the same time with great length, fresh and sapid.
Excellent Rioja, although it doesn't have the depth of the 1995 which impressed me, it remains delicious and far from being tired!

Absolutely brilliant wine, so much complexity and depth of flavour. Drinking wonderfully now, a mix of tertiary notes but also plenty of fruit left. Fantastic.

drinking at its apex. a stunning and balanced mid weight wine with sweet citrus oil enveloping every sip. Oak has all but integrated, but there are small notes of oak present. Probably could last longer, but I would drink these now.

Dark fruits, with loads of spice, leather and earth and a little sweetness on the tail. Open, generous, with the acid and not tannin lending the structure. More vibrant than the last bottle I had (which tasted a little tired). Totally delicious!

9 & 8 years sine we tried this wine (from the same batch) and then rated 91 & 93 respectively. The wine is definitely healthy and shows its age and definitely has matured well. Its good but not great is what we will sum it up. Good dark fruits, good secondary feel , light smoky. We would never place it as a tempranilio and maybe now paying the price a bit for a very ripe youth. Good wine but not the super wine it sets out to be. Maybe these first attempts of making this wine they where still trying to figure out what they wanted. Definitely subsequent vintages have been better. 91-92

Dinner to celebrate Christine's 70th (Trelissick Crescent, Ngaio, Wellington, New Zealand): Knockout Rioja, with superb presence and a fabulous tannic structure that adds great definition to the fruit. There is a hint of a slightly dirty oak component that came and went, but the wine was expressive and open for business. Rich, ripe, warm climate wine of distinction.

Quartet unplanned evening invited and hosted by Yoram (Rokah-Yam at Jaffa Port): color: dark red-brown-black nose: intense ripe fruity aromas with leather-spicy-earthy notes palate: full bodied, soft integrated tannins, good acidity level, good harmony, ripe plummy flavours, some earthy-spicy too, med complexity, lacks in structure, especially when comparing to the legendary 1995 vintage… med finish.

Rioja evening (Started at Wine-Bar, ended at HaTraklin): Again, as in previous tasting of this wine, I cannot get over the fabulous 1995 El Pison which left a memorable impression on me, the 1998 is a good wine with fruity aroma, smooth, silky, full-bodied, tannic, rich, complex, structured - but, and this is a big but, still not a great el-pison. (surely doesn't justify its cost).

Popped and poured. Dark red color. This continues to evolve from a more Rhone feel to a more Burgundian feel. With a decant it is ready to go and the tannins are resolved, but I think this may improve with age for those with the patience. Not sure it is worth the hype, but it is very good. A-/A?

Popped and poured, so not a long time to open up. This showed well, and was the first of more recent Artadi's tasted to show more Burgundy than Rhone. Good fruit, no hard edges, but seems like it has some time to go. Nice wine, but no show stopper. A-

Artadi tasting. The son of the producer came over to join us. (@ WB): Not so many specific notes. What I did wrote down: This wine is still very much alive with great complexity in the bouquet as well as on the palate with a lot of black fruit juice and good bitterness. The drinking window in CT is 2004 - 2009 now, but no mistake about it, it is still great and will continue to be so for at least the next two years.

Def abetter showing that a year ago. Has mellowed a bit more, very very elegant and balanced with a classic bordeauxesque finesse. Good oak, ripe fruit and a delicate nose. Very good 93+ and still with room to improve.

Dense wine, lots of red fruit on the nose. Good amount of oak. Round and tannins are now fully integrated. Fruit and body overpower the palate and for this level of wine, cost etc i would have liked some complexity and more finesse on the nose.

Color was quite advance for a 1998. Very "cheesy" nose and palate with ample underlying acidity and tanin. A bit out of whack for me but definitely an interesting wine or it was somehow cooked.
