  • Fully mature and integrated. Light garnet. Rose, cherry flavors. Probably not the best stored bottle.

  • Tastes like the cleanest, purest essence of a forest floor. Flavors of mushrooms and a faint hint of cherry and spice. Garnet, moderate acidity, no tannin.

Decanted for about an hour before consuming. I'd recommend drinking now; I don't see any room for this wine to improve.

  • We had several bottles of this wine, and this was not the best one. It was beautifully integrated and harmonious, but it lacked the energy and fruit of previous bottles. I guess it was not stored as impeccable as the other bottles. Nevertheless a joy.

  • Bolognese night at Tim's. Cork broke. Poured slowly through filter into decanter. Drank fast.
Appearance of very fine sediments, medium intensity, garnet colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, NOT OXIDISED! Medium+ intensity, with aromas of sandy soil, mushrooms, tobacco ash, undergrowth earth, dried herbs, and dried tea leaves with more air. Developed.
On the palate, dry, medium+ acidity, medium alcohol, absolutely integrated almost non-existent tannins, medium body. Good medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of sour red cherries, sour plum, savoury umami, sandy soil earth, mushrooms, tea leaves with more air. Long finish!
Very very good quality. End of life but very good in a tertiary way. Drink up fast and enjoy.
Back in the day this was labelled as 'Marcenasco Barolo Antiche Cantine della Abbazia dell'Annunziata'. From the era before Ratti became ultra-modern style.

  • Horizontal vintage tasting of 1971 Barolos.

Medium red. Nose of strawberry jam, clean but a bit muted, still fresh. On the palate harsh tannins, strawberries, raspberries, seems shut.

  • Hiprose coloured. Pronounced flavours with delicate tones of sweet spices, mature cherries and prumes, bonfire. Quite powerful on the palate with fine tones of spices, licquorice, dried fruit, quite pronounced acidity and a very fine tannin structure.

  • This was singing with about an hour of air. Potent complex intriguing nose. Strong cherry liqueur notes with truffles, wet leaves, potpourri. Palate was not as impressive but mature and integrated. Started to fade after a couple hours. Very nice.

  • A 1971 Renato Ratti Barolo ‘Marcenasco’ initially smelt of smoked meats. It breathed up to show some fresh rose, black earth, sweet cedar, spruce, curry leaf, ginger and menthol notes. It still had decent structure in the mouth and went quite truffley in the glass as it took on air.

  • Quite dark and ever so slightly hazy maroon-hued cherry color with lovely copper highlights and the appearance turning from orange to almost completely limpid towards the rim. Incredibly attractive nose with stunning depth and complexity; there are developed, perfumed aromas of leather, dried figs, wizened cherries, mocha, some oxidative sweet syrup notes and a little roasted nut character with a hint of Middle Eastern spice market. On the palate the wine is lively, full-bodied and incredibly rich with intense flavors of surprising power; there are notes of sweet red cherries, ripe red fruits, some exotic spices, a little leather and a hint of dried dark fruit. The structure is remarkable with both bright acidity and still quite firm and grippy tannins. The remarkably long finish is surprisingly lively and even youthful with complex, developed flavors of sweet red cherries, dark-toned fruit, sour cherry bitterness, some cranberry-driven tart red berries, a little exotic spices and a hint of peppery spice.

This is simply stunning stuff. 1971 Marcenasco is easily one of the greatest old Baroli I've had, offering a dumbfounding mélange of flavors both developed and remarkably youthful. Even at over 40 years of age, the wine seems that it hasn't reached its plateau of maturity, but instead it is still going up. Obviously 1971 was capable of producing wines for the long haul in Barbaresco. Based on how this bottle was drinking, this fella is not going anywhere anytime soon. Definitely a wine you'll want to get your hands on – an archetype of a well-made Nebbiolo that has aged just like they should.

  • 2013 editon of En Primeur - Kelly and Kevin’s excellent adventure; 3/26/2014-4/1/2014 (Mostly in Bordeaux and a night in Paris): All tertiary, sous bois, dry cherries, a hint of va, iron, rust, chestnut and a hint of oxidative note. Fully integrated shy palate. I thought really old Bordeaux from the 30s but Kelly correctly called Barolo. So did a few others. Others liked it more than I.

  • Stunning. High fill, beautiful colour, fresh, even fruity nose. A very fine wine.

  • Far sounder bottle than the one tasted three years earlier. Kept expanding in glass and decanter, gaining weight and depth. Outlasted and outclassed younger Baroli on the table. More red berry and leather than tar and roses.

  • The nose showed dusty potpourri, charcoal, beef stock and slightly faded dried red fruits. On the palate, I found strawberry and cedar, but with time this wine opened further to reveal tobacco and darker, sweeter red fruit with a bright, round mouth-feel. The finish was subtle, but elegant, and left me wanting more.

  • Not rated because in decline. Nicely mature, enchanting nose, but metallic on the palate with a short finish and frankly lacks the breed of top producers. But then this isn't one of his single-vineyard cuvées, which I have not tasted in the 1971 vintage.

  • The more older wines I try from this producer the more I like them. Perfectly aged Barolo with bottle sweetness and life to still burn.

  • My intention was to open to check for corkiness and let these slowly oxygenate. But when I went to open this just before guests arrived, cork was like sawdust. I decanted through a filter, and a rather foul smelling light color browning wine came out. The bottle had more sediment that I have ever seen other than MAYBE a VP. Since a couple people couldn't make it, I had decided to skip flight 5, but added back in as I expected this to be undrinkable. But lo and behold, when I went down for the first flight, the color had deepened. And the foul smell had blown off. And by time it was served (about 3 hours after opening) it was a perfectly nice mature Barolo. Good acids, red and black cherries, wet moss, tar. The miracle bottle. F on opening, B+/A- later.
