  • In a stunning place. Dark gold with an explosive nose of dried tropical fruits, hints of petrol, and heady jasmine. Palate has density, but also energy, with passion fruit, lemon tea, dried peaches, and crushed rocks. Acid holds the whole thing together, but never jumps out at you. This has at least another five years, but I don't see how it can get more delicious.

NOSE: medium-strong petrol; stone fruit (white peach); hint of honey; typical moderately-aged Riesling aromas.

    BODY: amber color; medium-full bodied.

TASTE: medium to medium+ acidity; moderately aged; very nice, but not stunning; proper Spatlese --- perhaps even starting to dry out a bit; orange; a bit zippy; pleasant underlying mineral note. This always has been, and probably always will be, more understated than it is brash. Drink or Hold.

  • Enjoyed this initially some petrol that blows off leaving some beautiful darkening yellow tropical fruit with very subdued yet supportive minerals, generous attack with and elegant acidity popping on the mid palate really satisfying finish

  • PnP. Darkening gold suggests the age. Enough petrol on the nose to keep it honest. Sweet lemon Pineapple with the right acidity backing it up. Slight mineral undertone. Medium plus weight. Delicious, wish I had more.91-92

  • At first, this had a slightly maderized character and seemed sweet and intense like an Auslese. Six days later it appeared to be fresher and more classic. Not quite sure what is going on.

  • Aerated too briefly I think (or drunk too quickly): Golden, rich, some sweetness, balancing acidity - simply a delightful Rheingau Spätlese.

  • Ingen dårlig vin, men blir litt flat og kjedelig.

  • Medium straw. Guava, light mineral component, subtle floral and honey aromas. Medium bodied, lacks flavor development and acid cut that might otherwise make this exciting. Not sure if I had a sub-par bottle or not, but my wife liked the restrained sweetness, so it was ultimately a win. Nearly medium-bodied, good, but short of very good; missing the charm factor.

  • Dinner with Monthly Group at Yantra (Yantra, Tanglin Mall): I was a bit on the fence with this one. It intrigued me (hence the long note), but I think we caught it in a rather awkward stage, so that while clearly very good, it was missing a little something on the final equation to make it a great Riesling. I must say it had a wonderful nose though, with a whole panoply of fragrant stone-fruit accents, from sweet nectarines to apricots and deep peach aromas, all with a nice bit of chalky limestone hanging in the background. A really attractive nose - almost more Rheinhessen than Rheingau in its expressive fruit-forwardness. Unlike some more developed 2007s though, the palate was still really sweet and almost primary, with a ton of nectarines on the attack giving way to a suggestion ripe lemon tones on the midpalate. It was almost Auslese-like in its heft and power. Thankfully, there was also a beautiful mouthwatering acidity behind all that sweet, ripe flesh that kept it from being cloying. The finish, in keeping with the rest of the wine, was long and powerful, with juicy stone-fruit flavours underlined by a gentle stream of minerality and a nice lift of bittersweet lemon zest. This needs time. At the moment, it has compelling depth and a good sense of presence, but clearly needs more complexity. I would lay it aside for another 6 to 7 years easily. In the meantime though, this was quite the perfect accompanaiment for spicy North Indian cuisine with all that sweetness and acidity - it acted both to douse the fire and to refresh the palate with each sip. On the other hand, the richly flavoured food calmed the sugar down in the wine somewhat and allowed the more citrus nuances to come to the fore. A solid wine, but much patience is required.

  • Wow! This has developed a great deal over the last few years: Intriguing nose of white fruits and something spicy, like hyacinths; rich but also precise and mineral, with excellent acidity. Very fine Spätlese, just beginning to reach maturity. - Even better on the second day: Lots of citrus in the nose and a more pronounced acidity finishing a taste of fine complexity. Very very fine. - On the third day a warm licorice-like flavour.

  • Very clean and typical Rheingau Spätlese on the nose, with a lot of minerality and some floral notes. In the mouth it lacks an inner strength and nerve that I find that some 2007s are missing at the moment. Slightly bitter finish otherwise very good.

  • I'm on the fence here. It has a generous and wonderful nose of orange, peach, guava, honeysuckle, and some starch even, but it is weaker on the palate, and fades far too short. I mean, it's fine and performs correctly, but it's not as exciting as it could have been, and the acidity is not up to the level I'd like it to have. Maybe it'll pick up some weight over the course of its evolution and become more interesting.

  • Nose: Peaches and oranges, very sweet. Taste: First tasted some peaches on the approach. Very tropical - mangoes, pineapple and papaya. I also get some honey and brightness. Good approach but very short finish. No acidity or minerality to balance out the sweetness; it's flabby.

  • Starts out with an explosion of bright yellow fruits and honeysuckle flavours, opening further with air to show so many other layers of stone, apple and other floral elements. Really rich with plenty of sweetness and weight, but there's really impressive acidity here that gives this fantastic energy and vibrancy in the mouth; fruit and stone with a livewire through it and a finish that just persists. Great wine!

NOSE: Day 1: candied florals and white sugar; tight to moderately expressive; hint of botrytis spice; honeysuckle. Day 2: opening a bit, sugar mellowing. Day 3: opening a lot, getting more into ripe tropical fruits with the botrytis coming out a bit more.

BODY: golden yellow color; medium-full bodied; spritzy on Days 1 & 2.

TASTE: Day 1: zingy; sandalwood; hints of botrytis and honey; hint of lime; not complex/hiding complexities right now; 7.5% alc.; short finish (20-25 sec.). Day 2: not as zingy as Day 1; opening a bit. Day 3: much smoother; opened-up a lot. In serious need of cellar time. Wait 10 years.

  • Skurnik/Theise Spring Tasting (City Winry): Sweet. Soft. Good, but not getting me really excited. 89-90

  • S.F. Riesling Week Kickoff (K&L Wines, San Francisco): Medium yellow. Distant honey and peach. Fairly weighty, mango fruit. OK but it left me wanting more minerality and length. I would never purchase this at $37.

  • -- decanted immediately before first taste --

NOSE: sweet bouquet seems very tight right now; a complex melange of petrol, smoke, lemon oil, and cinnamon are intermingled with medium botrytis spice; I could imagine this being otherworldly with some age on it.

BODY: a bit spritzy; golden yellow color of moderate depth; medium bodied.

TASTE: minerals; hint of clove; light-handed ripe pear/lychee flavor; hint of secondary butterscotch; lightly spicy; very fine balance -- sweet, but appropriate amount of acidity brings it back to center -- not fat, just very very tight; short finish (15-20 sec.); super easy drinking; a "true" Spatlese; Drinks closer to a score of "88" today, but I give it a "91" on account of potential for massive improvement in the cellar. Hold.

  • Terry Theise tasting - German wines from 2007; 6/10/2008-6/13/2008 (Tribecca grill): the masculine side of Rheingau, serious, rich and powerfull. (30% botritis) very good!
