Drank it at a Chateau Lanessan vertical tasting. A 1959 wine which is still in great conditions. Fruit has definitely evolved into a bakes/stewed red/black fruit. Still hits of mint, notes of eucalyptus and licorice complemented by truffle/mushroom notes. At the smell earthy and tobacco notes are also detectable and add complexity to the still alive bouquet.

Annual Pilgrimage to Chateau Lanessan; 5/23/2014-5/25/2014 (Chateau Lanessan, Bordeaux): Directly from the private cellar of the chateau, original cork with vintage clearly showing. Solid cork. Decanting is needed here, more than the other 50s but maybe 30-40 minutes. Once again this is a fragile wine so long decant over oxidises it. Much like the 55 it had a healthy solid core of fruit, well round , still with life and vibrancy in it. Such a joy at this age. 91-2

Annual Pilgrimage to Chateau Lanessan (and its 200 year old cellar ); 8/19/2011-8/21/2011 (Chateau Lanessan, Bordeaux): 1959 is probably the least successful of the 50s and at this stage light and going on lifeless. Maybe a bad bottle (although from the family's reserve) as the one we had a couple of years ago was a lot better. The 52 and 57 are so much better and full of vitality. What was impressive was the colour still dark and vibrant. In general 40s and 50s Lanessan's are amazing so shame on this one.

Clean rubber and iodine notes. Fruit flavors are faded, but still surprisingly present. This has held up very well for a bottle of this age, not to mention one from a non premium chateau. One person speculated it was a potential fake, but this isn't a bottle worth faking.

The nose had cherry and leather, spice and damp earth, and a little bit of vanilla. The palate was soft, with earth and cherry, spice and vanilla, and a good leather finish.

Saturdays at One - Volume 32: Tasted non blind. Opened and served immediately. Garnet color in the glass, clear hue throughout with no sign of bricking. Nose of rubber tire, iron and leather. Flavors of tart berries and cherries with a hint of iron on the finish. Medium acidity, resolved tannins, medium body. Drink now. This bottle was past prime but still surprisingly well..

Some nice sub- capsule gunk, cork comes out in one piece. This has handled 50 years ok, though not as nearly as well as Betsy. Warm easy red plum fruit, cedar, tobacco. Fully mature (ok, maybe a bit past fully mature), easy, maybe a bit thin on palate. Tannins are pretty much gone, but there's still fruit and finish is ok. It fades after about an hour, last bit is pretty ashy and thin. B/B-

l Lanessan's of the late 40s and to lote 50s are superb wines if kept well and can offer you a great voyage into old bordeaux at great prices too. This one was no exception although not as great as the 1952. Great mature medoc wine. Starting to show its age Drank at the chateau and it is from the private cellar so immaculately kept. A great experience. Thank you Gildine and Guillaume
