Opened in company without full attention given to the wine, so just a couple of notes: 1. Improved after opening over a few hours, encouraging given the age. My last bottle but has years to go, this was a magnum though. 2. The dominant tasting thought I had was that the wine was 'black'. Dark fruit, some licorice, dark chocolate and earthy spice, a bit of eucalyptus. Brooding.

On opening there was a slightly sour nose, which thankfully disappeared after a 30 minute decant. Very smooth tannins, good black fruit. Drinking well but probably reaching the end of its top drinking plateau. Mrs B wondered whether whole bunches were used? ****

I think it is in the window to give us the pleasure of drinking it! Still dark ruby in colour, a nose of classic Penfolds shiraz but with a more refinement! Medium to full body, dried herbs, red ripe shiraz fruits coats your palate! Singing now and is ascending to another level!

Breathed for 2 hours. Lovely thick chocolate, liquorice and sawdust. Nice blackbery & blackcurrant with a long dark finish. Supple and velvety with full body but not overwhelming in any way. Leathery and earthy to combine a forest feel with some live stock near by.
Dinner with some Penfolds wines (Magill’05/RWT’04/StHenry’04) - This one is more elegant, medium weighted with focused coffee aromas, but lacks the depth of the other two.

Galoots Lunch (Double Zero Napoletano- Sandy Springs): From magnum; a very good example of delicious modern Shiraz, liked the acid and the balance but the fruit was plummy and smooth blackberry with vanilla, good structure, aging nicely, would not confuse as N. Rhone though; well done.

Syrah vs. Shiraz (Cellier Wine Shop, Athens, Greece): One of the stars of the tasting, and definitely my choice if I had to pick a wine for immediate consumption. Medium garnet. Eucalypt, blueberry, violet and scents of undergrowth. Refined and complex, medium-bodied with silky tannins, round, perfectly balanced and long. Everybody loved it. Great now but will drink nicely for another decade or so.

Garnet fading to a tawny rim. Evolved with chocolate, mint and liquorice around a core of blackberries and mint. Supple and velvety with full body but not overwhelming. Leathery and well balanced with persistent finish. Drinking beautifully now.

Med-dark garnet with a tawny rim. Expressive nose with esspresso coffee, mint, eucalypt, blueberry and dark chocolate. Med-full bodied, supple and balanced with soft tannins, rich fruit and balancing acidity. Long aftertaste. Not as promising as the 2006, but will definitely improve over the next decade.

You got to hand it to Penfolds....big bold reds all the way to the big daddy. Magill Estate has so many layers, fruit and spice and everything nice ...and so smooth for a young wine. Put it down , down, down in the ground....cant wait to wake this one up in 15 years....beautiful

Exceptionally good, though perhaps biased by the company and the occasion. But beautifully inky and dark without being overpowering. Needs air.
