Perhaps the most power-packed Burlotto wine I've encountered, which is surely a function of the vineyard and vintage. Having said that, this is reasonably approachable already which surely has something to do with the more elegant house style. Excellent, but 5-10+ years from peak drinking.

Nebbiolos, white truffles, Volume VIII (Chicago, IL): Very dense in the context of the other Burlotto wines, and the lack of stem inclusion makes for a very, very different wine. Darker and earthy, but with some of the same lightness that Burlotto is renowned for. Youthful, leathery tannins, and still a bit chewy at this point. Denser than I would expect for a 2004 as well.

Piemonte Wimps (La Trompette): On the nose, forest floor, just a hint of complexity. Very clean palate - clearly barolo but more resolved, more ready to share its pleasures than the previous bottle. On swirling around the mouth this really came into focus - a wine definitely worthy of contemplation - certainly one could imagine drinking this slowly over the course of a few hours and enjoying seeing its progress.

Decanted four hours, Zalto burgundy glass. First taste was very friendly with polished tannins, mature mellow aromas and a sense of calm. With dinner it was a bit warmer and less mellow while it gave an impression of being lighter; less intense than the more recent Monviglieros. Fine mature Barolo with plenty of time yet.

Dark ruby color. Aromas of black cherries, coffee and chocolate, dried rose petals and wood spices. Richly balanced fruit in the mouth with excellent depth and length and fully integrated tannins. Very complex and long on the palate. This is a truly great Barolo just reaching its peak drinking window.

From Vigneto Cannubi, "the grand cru vineyard" in Piedmont. William decanted this from 10am in the morning. This wine has such a lovely fresh fruit nose, like the berries in the wood. Very fragrant. Tannins are really smooth (surprisingly for a 2004 Barolo). This must be the decanting from the morning.

There is almost sweet and strawberry-like dimension to the excellent classic Barolo aromas of the nose; harmonious soft taste which in the context of a rather fat lamb dish appeared to be neither very tannic nor very acidic. Easy to drink now, at least with food. - More demanding on the second day: complexly fragrant and with a velvety texture to the taste which is much more tannic without the food. Still nice to drink now, but will soften with further ageing.

Dark Maroon with very thin watery rim. Currants, raspberries, strawberries followed by chocolate on the nose. Strawberry notes very soft on palate little acid but strong tannins even after being opened over an hour an a half. Very dry finish. Let age several more years. Good with grilled rib eye, but could use more resolve.

Dekantert. Begynner virkelig å komme til segselv. Tannine er knust, syren er høflig, frukten er herlig. Ekstremt stort behag.

Dekantert 2 timer. Huker seg ned og gjør seg vanskelig, gir opp etter to glass, pumper, dag 2; smal, fokusert, dette blir bra.

G.D. Burlotto Barolo (Del Posto Restaurant, NYC): Much tighter nose than previous Cannubis. Quite thick and rich in the mouth. Needs 5 years.
