  • An extraordinary wine coming from a well stored 3L bottle. Aromas of black cherries, anise, leather and underbrush. Fully integrated fruit in the mouth with excellent length and depth. Complex and supple on the palate. Remarkabl intact at 46 years of age.

  • 2012 Oregon Pinots (w/ no formal notes) (Woodward's): This bottle had seen better days. Seemed like heat damage (provenance unknown / Aabalat). No TCA, brett, or VA. Just tired old thin fruit and acid. Dang!

  • From a 3-liter jeroboam. Bottle #417 of total 499 jeroboams. 12% alcohol.

Aged, moderately deep maroon color with a syrupy brown core and a clear, brick-red rim. Aged, tertiary and quite sweet-toned nose with rich aromas of raisins and dried dates, some oxidative notes of soy sauce and light nutty tones, a little bit of old leather, a hint of pipe tobacco and a touch of syrupy richness. The wine is aged, textural and full-bodied on the palate with tertiary flavors of dried dates and syrupy richness, some dried figgy tones, a little bit of leathery funk, light cigar notes, a savory hint of meaty umami and a balsamic touch of sweet VA. Despite its age the wine is still remarkably structure-driven, thanks to its high acidity and ripe yet still noticeably unresolved and quite assertive tannins. The finish is long, powerful and tannic with intense, savory flavors of dried dates and figs, some leathery tones, a little bit of wizened sour cherry, light oxidative notes of soy sauce, tertiary hints of syrupy and balsamic VA and a touch of raisin.

A beautiful, classic old Taurasi with lots of age. The wine is fully mature or already slightly past its peak, but still brimming with bold, tertiary fruit and thus is fully enjoyable despite its advanced age. There's no denying that the wine is very old, but even though the first signs of oxidation have started to creep in, the fruit hasn't thinned out and there's still enough body to keep the formidable structure well at bay. Hard to say whether the standard 0,75-liter bottles are in this good condition or past their peak, but this was fully enjoyable right now. No need to age the wine any further - time to drink up.

  • This 42 year old wine had notes of black licorice and dark cherries with faint traces of cinnamon.

We decanted it for over two hours and it barely budged. Built like a brick *%#@house!

  • Had this last spring with a dinner of crock pot Sicilian Chicken and forgot to make an entry. It was perfect. Unbelievable for such an old wine. The hype was correct. I am buying more reds from this region now. Don't know how long this has left-but, err on the safe side drink it now and ENJOY.

  • Wonderfully mature, this offers a really fun balance of maturity and fresh, sweet fruits. Plenty of earth aromas and flavors, but they mostly dance around the core of juicy red and black fruits. I can only imagine what this would have been like on release, but more importantly, if you can find one in good condition (this was near pristine), it's worth your time and money. Deeply satisfying flavors that, as some fine, older wines can, connects one to a time and place decades in the past. Now or in the next 6-8 years, before it starts to fade. highly recommended

Aerated to decanter 3 hours; plenty of sediment.

  • A gift from a friend in honor of my daughter's birth year! Served with lasagna and was a special event for our family.
Brownish red and a touch cloudy, but with a tarry, earthy nose and a silky mouthfeel, it was delicious.
I'd venture to say it will carry on as such for a number of years with proper storage.
    Thanks, Livio!!

  • From the wine list at Charlie Bird (NYC). I thought this was a great example of a mature Taurausi, that still has a lot of life in it. Color was only slightly browning at the edges - still lots of red. On the nose this was quite earthy, but not funky. The fruit has tamed down, but it still present, tertiary notes of tar, smoke, and stony minerality seem to take more center stage. Finish is medium. Really fun and enjoyable, but end of a long wine dinner so not really focused on as much as it deserved.

  • Brought from his cellar to our Italian dinner by my friend Livio. The oldest Taurasi I've ever had. Only the slightest browning at the edges, but the aglianico had lost its muscle and was soft, round with a gentle sweetness. I'd advocate drinking sooner rather than later.

  • Farewell to a Friend...With Some Wines He Would Have Enjoyed (A Tavola - Chicago IL): Lean and earthy with somewhat muted fruit and more substantive earth. I seemed to enjoy this more than other tasters did tonight.

  • Exquisite mature Taurasi.. Brick edges aground a dark garnet center.nose of violets, leather, cherry and a sweet lilac aroma. Medium to rich mouthfeel. Definitely needs a few hours to breathe as the initial nose and taste was a bit sour but that gave way to lots of sweetness after 1-3 hours. In addition to the flavors in the nose, there is some sour cherry in the front and earthy mushroom in the aftertaste. I had this with a number of different foods, including a braised short ribs and octopus. My first bottle of this year was had in 1990 and the last 23 years later was even better. Wish I had more!

  • The nose was amazingly young, vibrant and constantly changing. It opened up with aromas of cherry pip smoke, sweet cream and floral notes. As time passed it started to take on notes of dried coca and classic fruitcake. On the palate, it was silky and refined with intense blackberry fruits, tart plum and minerals. Tart red fruits and blackberry lingered on the finish. This wine seemed almost impossibly young yet there was no reason to doubt its authenticity.

  • SAG (Blind) Tasting (Chez Weber - Chicago IL): Blind tasting. tough wine to appreciate in this flight, given its age and entirely different flavor profile. Good fruit dominated by earthy character and some red cherry that just wouldn't die. Too much acidity given everything else that is left in this wine.
