Très minérale, délicat, sur des notes de clémentine, d'ananas, acidité moyenne, le vin prend un peu d'ampleur après 2h d'ouvertures mais ca reste plutôt simple. Un vin savoureux, frais à boire maintenant.

Contained but enticing nose with white flowers, yellow apple, lime, honey and grapefruit. Medium bodied and acid-driven. Lovely concentrated fruit, accompanied by citrus peel bittertones - the latter continuing throughout a long finish, in conjunction with the tingling acidity that is the definite signature of this wine.

12.0% - Clear, medium to light gold hue / clean, med intensity - green apple, lime zest, orange, nutty, fir pines, honeyed and waxy background / dry, high zippy acidity, med to light body, med to pronounced intensity, med length. Perhaps a little bit of oxidative notes at this stage... not sure if it's only this bottle, but I would open any remaining in the coming year or so if I had more.

Monthly Tasting Group: Rieslings (Ngon Bistro, St. Paul, MN): Light straw color. Drank a glass over 40 minutes. This was pretty lean overall, not a lot of fruit showing. Fusil, slate, light apple on the nose. The palate is lean, minerally, slate, tart apple and bit of peach fuzz, pretty dry. I like it; it wasn't flashy, more subtle 89 to 90pts.

Light straw yellow. Open nose of ripe sitrus and some petrol, green apples. Fresh with great concentration. Acid all the way. Holding greatly still. Could hold at least a couple of years more.

Whoa ... Concentrated, rich, almost buttery. Much lees character shines forth, soda crackers and popcorn, but against a base of baked pear, lemon rind, key lime pie, kumquat, mango, tree sap, pina colada. The acid is far from shy despite the broad, sappy body. Pears swing back towards green and some Granny Smith enters the picture. Strange juxtaposition that winds up recalling an electrolyte-laden sports drink laced with iron supplement, albeit one with more body. The truly live wire battery acidity persists until the end.

2008 Nikolaihof Vom Stein Riesling Federspiel Wachau (Austria)
“Light” brownish yellow and inviting crystal clear color. Pleasantly fresh and sweet nose. Peaches and ripe pears. It is a delicious sweet nose here, which I did not quite manage to put my finger on. However, I am thinking mature oranges. Stunning entrance, had to redo it several times, hehe. Beautiful minerals. Balanced sweetness and bitterness. Here are oranges, red melon and peach tendencies, without being sweet and sticky. The flavors follows along for a long time, fine and soft. Round fine tannins, which tickles elegantly in the end. The finish is complex, while it is mild and pleasant. Have seen others (CT) notes on this wine that appealed powerful tannins (pucker factor), but I find it not so. This is balanced and elegant. This again is perhaps one of my better rieslings so far. Various vintage tables for 2008, among others a vinmonopolet says that 08 should have been a good vintage in Austria (8 of 10 score), which I definitely believe. This is one of the first bottles I bought in terms of collection. I've had them lying in 3-4 years time now. And I have only one left. Would have liked to have more. I think this is perfectly within its drinking window now. Noting for own learning: to buy a minimum of 4 bottles :) or more of the same wine in the future.

A private lunch (Restaurant In de Wulf *, Dranouter, Belgium): Lovely weight of fruit, excellent acidity, balances intensity and elegance, attractive minerality and bright floral notes, hint of wax; very good length. A wine of finesse and precision - a mini-Smaragd.

I found this to be harsh and not as generous as I like....the minerality is almost too intense. in following days this became more generous, balanced with some fruit coming out to balance the extreme minerality. trying to get into austrian riesling but its taking time.

Smells like peach and pear pie, or cheesecake? A bit of richness showing through on the nose, smells really good. The acidity this wine carries on the palate is fantastic and carries the orange/melon/peach flavors along for a long ride. Tied for my favorite of the tasting in a 8 bottle line-up of Rieslings from all over the world.

A previous bottle of this Federspiel was the worst Nikolaihof I've ever tried. This one showed very similar the first day, barely drinkable with very off aromas and a simple thin fruit. After a glass it went back into the fridge for a couple of days. It came out as a completely different wine. It's still a bit strange for my palate in the mouth, but the nose is very good.
Difficult to rate: I really like the smaragds, and the Steiner Hund is one of the most intriguing wines I know of, but this federspiel baffled me and is difficult to rate (probably somewhere in between 68 and 86). If I had more bottles I would probably wait a few more years.

Sans note. Le nez est joli, belle typicité du riesling, citronnné, pétrole. Par contre la bouche est plutôt mince et courte. Un peu décevant.
Le lendemain, plus mielleux et ample, mais sans plus.
