Impressively rich as you would expect from Cayuse but not as feral as some. Faint nose, non-description finish. I couldn’t tell this was Tempranillo but then I don’t drink much Spanish wine. No development in the glass, no real focus. So pretty good as a strong genetic red wine but not memorable.

Had this on back to back nights with two different sets of friends. Two hour decant both times. This wine never disappoints and is in a wonderful place now. Less than usual typical Cayuse funk but this juice delights with different notes from start to a perfectly mellow but long lovely finish.

Dark and opaque. Immediate pronounced aroma of smoke, cassis, blackberry, with just a hint of the Cayuse "funk". Very full-bodied, rich and concentrated dark fruits on the palate, but very smooth and balanced, with no significant tannin in the foreground. Deep and rich long aftertaste. Not quite as good the second night but still outstanding. Ric

Not really sure what to think. Purchased direct from winery. Cork completely disenegreted upon opening. Filtered into a decanter & began consuming. Smokey, spicy, meaty, herbal, red & black cherry profile. Something here is out of balance but it has very interesting components. I’m not a regular Tempranillo drinker so hard to place this in comparison. Getting better with time but has some heat.

My first Impulsivo. Pnp. Very nice wine. Great nose, little bit of spice and funk. Light and delicate mouthfeel, with nice grip and balance. We were impressed.

PnP. Slightly lighter red than the syrahs. Still pretty dark red. Really lovely nose of tart raspberry, sous bois, with hints of candied cherries. A bit closed on the palate – some nice red fruits, a bit of bitterness in the mid palate, which carries slightly into a really long finish. Will revisit in a few hours – and think I will decant.
After an hour or so, more blood appears on the nose and palate. There is still some nice fruit underneath, but it is surrounded by savory flavors dominated by blood. But that seems to blow off after a bit, and there are some nice flavors of blueberry syrup (savory, not sweet), and some nice brown herbs and sous bois.
I thought this was good -- not amazing. Maybe with more age? But I still prefer the Syrahs.

Dark garnet-purple, totally opaque. Deep, dark fruit aroma which opened slowly and was better the second night. Smoky, roasted meats, with flavors to match. Big and somewhat coarse, more one-dimensional. Won't get any better, but should hold for a few more years. I'd drink it soon, though. This isn't as smooth or complex as his syrahs, which are his best wines. Ric

BYO - US wines (Trio): Very young and fresh black currant fruit. Lovely fine-grained tannins and a lovely acidity. It is however quite special, in the Cayuse way, and has the lovely "funk" to it, like sewer, stable, wet hay :-)

My tasting of 12 Christophe Baron wines. Dark garnet, totally opaque. Closed aroma at first, opened slowly. Deep blackberry and plum aromas. Very full-bodied, black fruits, very concentrated, a bit hot, smoky, but balanced. Moderate tannin, long, hot aftertaste. It might actually soften more with more time. Ric

Popped and poured, followed over 5 hours. Generously shared by a great friend.
Rich decadent aromas of purple and blue fruit, "rocks-type funk, Houston, and braised burnt Korean BBQ ends. Palate was thick viscous mouth coating purlple and blue fruit with olive brine and burnt ends. No heat. Minimal acid. It seemed to walk the fine line between gloppy and some alien-Esque or savantly applied exuberant expression of fruit. For me, it stumbled more than danced. Reminded me of Mongo. Somewhat sloppy mouthfeel due to lack of acid. Finished for minutes and left me with a black eye and fat lip.
Despite this lack of structure, it was tasty. Not sure aging any longer would help this wine as its most enjoyable attribute is the fruit. Blind, I would never guess Tempranillo.

This is a bigass wine plain and simple. Deep dark fruit yet deftly balanced. Regardless, there is a hearty backbone here not usually found with Washington Tempranillos.
Wow, what a wine. Big by any standard, but with such class and complexity. A knockout nose of sweet dark fruit, smoke, leather and tobacco, with just a touch of minerality and the "Cayuse funk" (a lot less than most of their Syrah offerings). Deep penetrating dark fruit with with a slightly spicy finish. Very new world, but also very Tempranillo. Outstanding.

Popped and slow o'ed for an hour or so. Having drank this wine recently, I was expecting a terrific bottle and there was no disappointment. This wine is such a unique bottle for Washington. Maybe only 15 wineries make this varietal give or take but none of them possess the power, depth, or mouth-filling pleasure that the Impulsivo provides. Immense and complex with notes of grilled meat, tar, woodsmoke, black olives, pimenton, rosemary, black plums, and blackberries. Layers and layers of dark fruit, meat, and smoke. Like I said, complex. Don't let the other WA tempranillos fool you, this is the real deal! 96 pts.

Decanted for around 2 hours. Drank this as my Seahawks were kicking the Broncos tail all over the field. This Cayuse bottling doesn't get much pub as they only produce about 120 cases a year and that's a shame as it's a damn good expression of tempranillo. Deep and dark with a brooding nose of meat, anise, baked plums, and smoke. Just hints of chewy tannins surround the core of plush cherry, red plum, licorice, and roasted meat notes. Medium to big palate weight without being flabby leaves the impression of a very smooth and delicious wine. If you can, try and keep these in the cellar as they become more complex with age. 94pts.
A balanced beauty after an hour in the decanter. A fight between cherries and olives on who had the upper hand. A little smoke, meat juice, tobacco, and herbs rounded out the smooth palate. An absolutely perfect match with lamb chops off the Q smothered in fennel and olive salsa. Side note: fennel and Cayuse work well together. Massive flavor but not over-powering and actually gentle on the mouthfeel. One of my favorite Cayuse's I've had to date.

For my 1000 CT note I needed to open something special and Cayuse is always a good choice! A tremendous wine in a great spot. Blackberries, cherries, burnt caramel, black tea, seaweed and soy, light notes of red cabbage, hay and a touch of Cayuse mineral funk. Very integrated from start to finish, tannins are resolved and did not change much over the 3hrs decant. Pair absolutely perfectly with lamb shanks over polenta topped with basil and goat cheese.
Better than the 2007 in my opinion. Fruit was richer, alcohol less evident for an overall better balance. Doesn't drink like a Rioja, but the temperanillo is a nice varietal to experience in a more new world style.

An absolute stunner. I've never [knowingly] consumed tempranillo before - but whatever flavor profile this grape is supposed to cast - I'm buying into hook line & sinker. It has a cleverly fresh tartness that this feeble mind can't quite verbalize, wrapped around the Cayuse standards of roasted meat, blood, funky earth & tobacco, and combining into a lush tapestry of sultry smoked ambrosia.

Decanted five hours, this is a varietally correct Temperanillo (great burnt cherry notes) that overlayed gorgeously with the olive/brine signature of the En Chamberlin vineyard. And it boasts its winemaker's signature ethereal mouthfeel and remarkable balance. All that's missing here -relative to other Cayuse wines-- is a little more depth of fruit, but time may bring that out. 93, for now, with upside.

Good now, very smokey, dark fruit and oak. Smells more like a Syrah, but has a very extracted Chianti taste.... I like this wine for it's take on a very traditional Tempranillo varietal, making it modern. A fun wine to drink.

100% tempranillo. Huge wine. Deep and dark with massive structure. Seemed to have more fruit this year versus the savory components of the 06. Dark raspberries, blackberries, plums with some cabbage and meat. Needs a little time to come together but when it does, lookout! 95-97pts.
