Piemonte: Back to the truffling!; 11/24/2022-12/3/2022 (Wineries and various restaurants): Fabio was very open with us. This was apparently ‘not the best year’ although honestly even with that primer I didn’t see it. This tasted excellent. It’s all of the herbal and fruit character of a typical Monvigliero. I didn’t even completely get the age on it. The wine is still drinking very young and fresh. If you had said last year’s release I would believe it. From the cellar of the domaine so makes sense and that is some of it but still it was surprising. Just a wonderful wine and easily the wine of the meal.

Luftet 2 timer i glasset. Lukt av kirsebærkompott, anis, rulletobakk, frisk salvie, tørket oregano. Smak av kirsebærkompott, provencekrydder, snus, hvit pepper, tjære og søt lakris. Moden, litt kokt frukt, medium syre og medium tannin. Litt alkoholstikk og virker litt varm i munnen.

After three hours in the decanter, this began to blossom. Some funk at first (brett?) which mostly dissipated, though not entirely, with air. Then came fig, tar and sweet rose petals. Not as much strawberry confiture on the nose and palate as the 08 or 09 vintages. Drinking really well and a great match with our carmelized fennel risotto.

Holy shit. Intensely aromatic, cinnamon and flowers and spices and orange peel, cocoa and air freshener craziness. Incredibly silky palate. A bit out of norm for Barolo due to the whole cluster, but it is still clearly Barolo beneath the batshit loonball awesomeness of a whole cluster Nebbiolo nose. Perhaps not quite the concentration of the 04 but I'm not going to split hairs, this is intense, haunting and awesome. Like the 04, the stem inclusion has softened the acidity and tannin and it is surprisingly approachable and incredibly drinkable despite the youth, though I have no doubts of it's ageworthiness. Every time I drink Burlotto Monvigliero I absolutely love it and I become increasingly convinced it is a unique wine, world-round.

As advertised, very light in color while very tannic in structure. An intriguing wine with much to offer. Would enjoy it with game or steak or lamb.

G.D. Burlotto Barolo (Del Posto Restaurant, NYC): Beautiful nose. Very balanced and harmonious. Elegant and perfumed. Quite classic. Much more similar to the 07 than the 06. 93-94 points.
