Emmerich Knoll - Three decades of Riesling and Grüner Veltliner (Restaurant Zum alten Markt, Munich): Glass: Gabriel Standard Tasting note is based on usually two different bottles. All bottles were coming straight out of the winery cellar in pristine condition. Clear, deep golden color. Nose with a lot of ripe apricot, crushed stones and some slightly oxidized notes. On the palate it can’t deny the warm vintage. A bit broader and bolder, probably some botrytized grapes, a bit hot and it lacks a bit of tension. Creamy texture, nice complexity. Good length. 90-91

Dinner and Wine at Sun Wah (Sun Wah BBQ, Chicago, IL): Full nose with rich white fruits. The palate too has a richness about it, with round full body and moderate acids that keep it fresh. Fine now, but probably going to crack-up sooner than late. Drink up.

Dinner at Sun Wah (Chicago, IL): Heavy and weighty, this is not the style of riesling I like at all. It reminds me a lot of why I started out with such a dislike of Austrian rieslings. Peaches and apricots on the palate, this also seems to have a bit of botrytis on the palate which doesn't work at all here. It's just more heaviness slopped on top. Needs some acidity to cut through all of this.

Pretty light golden color showing hints of age, Rich nose showing quince, pear, and strarfruit with a white pepper spice. Oily dense texture that is smooth with great minerality and concentrated white fruits in a dry style. Enough acid to keep it reasonably lively. Probably at peak now. Quite good.

Consumed over two days - much more complete and complex on day 2. On day 1 the component parts were there fruit, minerality, acidity but not in harmony nor delineated. On day 2, the nose was expressive with multiple notes including apple, honey and, slate. Palate was complete, balanced and long. Needs some time or air to show its stuff.

Described as "Baroque" by Crush mailer- couldn't agree more. Big, rich, opulent riesling. Very complex aromas and flavors. A bit of a muddled mess, but a fun wine to exercise the senses-trying to isolate specific tastes and smells.

Drink up. Fully mature, golden, nicely weighted and medium to fully textured. Tropical and balanced, but not as lively as you'd like for a bottle that's 7 years old. No verve or tension. Wouldn't touch a bottle at retail unless provenance were assured...and even then...

Magnum Madness 2011! (Marshall's place): A difficult transition between the Grange des Pères and this wine. This shows really lush, delicious aromas with slight petrol. Quite pleasing. The palate is soft, with mild acidity, but it's the fruit that really cuts through the palate of this one. Awesome acid ramps up into the finish, with some distinct dryness on a large sip. Very pleasing, but not too much depth.
