Weekly tasting group #033; A mixed set of red wines. (@ RR): Beautiful bouquet with licorice and ripe black fruits. On the palate a juicy wine with some sweet spices, good fresh acidity, a touch of sweetness and a lot of alcohol. Pleasant use of oak. A mouth full of alright, but not really complex wine.

This wine had the most wonderful nose when we first opened it, it could be nothing but an opulent - plummy, jammy, juicy - Australian Shiraz- would have given it a 90 or 91 based on the boquet. Had it with grilled tenderloin and it really didn't open up - the taste was a small percentage of the nose. It was far from bad, but after we had let it breathe for 30 minutes and got the nose, we were expecting better. So 90 for the nose, 85 for the taste, 87 overall. If I had another bottle, I probably would not let it breathe - I would consume immediately. I say that because over the course of 60-90 minutes it also went a little flat and lost what edge it had. Could have been a contender...

Dark red purple color. Nose has nice herbs, spice, eucalyptus, creosote, blackberry. The palate is nicely balanced with good fruit, oak, pepper, spices, creosote, and a medium finish. Medium body. Had to drink out of ceramic coffee cups and this still showed its beauty.

Another nice effort by Peter Lehmann, though I definitely prefer the 2006 to this 2007. Big Aussie Shiraz, still has the big blueberry and some oak and spice. I'd have to compare them side by side to tell you exactly what it is about the '06 that makes it a 2-3 point better wine. Overall the '06 just tastes completely integrated I think, whereas this '07 you can pick out distinct tastes at certain points. The '06 is smoother and fuller, and the '07 is missing the depth of a little leather and licorice that the '06 displays. All of this said, I really like it, and Peter Lehmann remains one of my favorites (if not my favorite) from Australia (Chris Ringland's wine is excellent too).

This was the surprise of the evening. Beautiful nose, great fruit, and absolutely smooth as silk. Reminds of a great Pipeau, but even silkier. Awesome value!

Staff Favorites (Farpointe Cellar): The nose had lots of chocolate mixed with black fruit. It had a lot of creamy oak behind the chocolate and fruit. The palate was the opposite of the nose. Lots of creamy oak followed by chocolate and fruit. The finish was very hot.

On the whole a very enjoyable wine with pepper, blackberry and a hint of black currant on the nose. Peppery spice and intense dark fruit, although not long lasting nor a full feel to the palate.

Cedar and a hint of pepper on the nose. Cedar burns off after a while, flattening out the nose, which then allows the 14.5% alcohol to show itself occasionally (personally, not a good thing). On the palate, smooth, somewhat uninteresting mouthfeel, with sweetness provided by oak and moderate, but integrated tannins, which again falls prey to the creeping taste of alcohol. Finishes a bit hot. Generally, easy, anytime drinking at $10, but not for a penny more.

Popped and poured. This is a very well made wine, although not a superexciting one. (But for the price, it's sensational; you'd be hard pressed to find a better QPR anywhere). Not a bomb on the nose, but those odors that were there were pleasant. No oak detected on the nose, but on the palate however a nice touch of integrated oak. Tannic. Will buy more of this, for drinking no sooner than 2011. OK match with garlic tomato chicken and couscous.

Good, but not as interesting as last time. There was some bacon fat on the nose early on, but that faded after an hour. Taste was more tart today. It's a good everyday Shiraz.

Decanted for 2.5 hours. Cedar with spice cake on the nose, and I also noticed some mint. Taste was more like honey cakes. Medium finish and tannin. Very interesting and enjoyable. I will definitely buy more, especially at $13 a bottle.

Great for the price. Easy to drink and not too opaque/inky. Good with pizza.

Classic Aussie shiraz. Bit of pepper and a long finish. Served with lamb roast and white sweet potatoes.

One of my favorite reasonably priced Shiraz. Solid year after year. Pepper and berry.

Very nice wine. Twisted off, poured consumed with pizza. Muted nose, wonderful flavors - a great deal for $19. Should probably get some more.

Very typical Barossa Shiraz. Good value, but not particularly exciting or deep.
