This was indeed a very special Rioja and special wine. With the elegant of a Grand Cru Burg and complexity (and some Brett) of a first growth Bordeaux, this wine stole the night that included many crazy wines and two other 1864 Riojas.
5x 1964 red, 2x Sherry: Five 1964 reds. All tasted blind. Rioja for the win! The 1964 Rioja vintage is just magical. Clear winner and WOTN, the Rioja Alta Ardanza Reserva Especial (98 pts). Highly complex, ever changing, clean and precise, very Burgundian. Next Angelus (95 pts), perfectly mature, elegant, pure Bordeaux missing just a bit more substance for an even higher rating. Third, CVNE Vina Real Reserva Especial (94 pts) a bit past its peak with hyper intense and intriguing coffee/malty and nutty notes. Finally, two solid Burgundies. Louis Remy Chambertin (92 pts) showed very young, with almost new world-like, ripe fruit and sweetness which was a bit perplexing. The Leroy d’Auvenay (90 pts) had a good structure but was not harmonious and clean enough.
TN: Wonderful intense nose. Superb, right from the go. Jumping out of the glass. On the palate bright red fruit, some cola notes, stems, beautiful minerality. Superb structure, so fine, so round, wonderful long finish. With time blue fruit, some toasty notes. Ever so slightly changing. Wow. Tasting it blind I and most others were convinced that this must be a Burgundy. This bottle was lightyears ahead of a bottle of the same lot a year ago in almost every category (complexity, precision, expressiveness, harmony).
Decanting: Double decanted 2 hours before consumption. Followed over two more hours. Right after opening this was a bit shy. In the two hours after double decanting the bottle the wine gained a lot of substance, concentration and become so much more harmonious. It needed air.
No notes taken. I had high hopes for this bottle given the raving reviews on CT and the perfect provenance and very high fill level. Unfortunately, this bottle was a little too mature with not enough fruit left to balance all the tertiary aromas and especially not the focus and precision a great wine needs. I’ve recently tasted the nectar of gods with a clear 100 point CVNE Vina Real Reserva Especial 1964 which needed two hours to get there and open up. But this bottle didn’t get that same boost from air. Maybe the next bottle (I’ve got two more) will be up there with the CT scores. Fingers crossed.

The ‘64 LRA Viña Ardanza Reserva Especial was the first of its kin...At 55+ years it is a transcendent wine experience. This Spanish Gem is soft, elegant and classy AF...it’s so versatile in its flavor nuances I’d venture to say u could throw it in blind as a ringer for vintage Burgundy, Barolo, Rhône, and even Bordeaux. The secret to picking these out blind? Find the dill.

Hauntingly Seductive. Sophisticated and charming, the palate is svelte and effortless with perfect balance. Signature nose of dill, truffle, cedar and sweet tobacco. I’m not quite sure Classic Rioja gets much better than this!
The Viña Ardanza is only labeled ‘Reserva Especial’ in what LRA considers exceptional vintages. This was the first such year and it has only been elevated to this status in three other vintages ( 73, 01, and the recently released 10 ). Highly recommend seeking these out as they are a tremendous value, even if ur lucky to find the older unicorns.

What a lovely wine—like a visit to the home of a dear, old, elegant aunt. Faded cedar, dusty spices, tobacco, caramelized plum and red apple, red fruits, black truffle. Soft mouthfeel that finishes with balancing acidic lift. This deserves plenty of carefully focused attention. I’ve spent two months slowly enjoying 1/2 glasses a la Coravin and I’m a little sad to have finished it. Highly recommended if you can find a bottle.

During a tasting lunch. Difficult to top the 1942 Rioja right next to it but we gave it a go. Medium brown. Also here, complex nose of tobacco, sugar molasses, spices and wood. Soft on the palate, still good acidity with a feeling of wine/port blend aromatically on the finish. Nice, but not the best half decade old Rioja of this trip.

Nariz de impacto, potente y concentrado. Inicialmente con nula expresión de crianza clásica y un perfil inédito que no recuerda a ningún otro vino de La Rioja Alta probado a día de hoy. Predomina la fruta roja en compota, manzanas asadas, caramelos de lilas y un fragante fondo a tostados cercanos al azúcar caramelizado. Pasada la primera ráfaga inicial el vino comienza a dar notas de fina reducción: cuero viejo, trufa negra, madera de castaño, nogal, solera vieja, ahumados, castañas asadas. Muy elegante y profundo. Cada vez más denso y concentrado. Asoman aromas de fruta negra, café aromático, manteca de cacao, y un deje mineral terroso casi imperceptible.
En boca es todo equilibrio. Con un tacto sedoso, unos taninos redondos y grasos, y una acidez viva, casi cítrica, que lo hacen ligero en el paso y de gran profundidad en el trago. Resplandece y perdura en boca indefinidamente con un matiz de dulcedumbre, nada acidula, matizada por la acidez. Un vino que ilustra el porqué de la fama justificada de la cosecha de 1964: luminosidad, vigor, acidez, elegancia... Unos céntimetros por encima del 904 GR del mismo año. Gran vino!!!

Nariz sin apenas sensaciones reductivas y un perfil muy alejado del clasicismo riojano (nada de duelas ni de cuadra). Al abrir se muestra algo tímido con sutiles notas de manteca de cacao, manzana asada, pulpa y un chispazo de caramelo. Se abre dando aromas de trufa, castaña, pimienta ahumada, flores marchitas, maderas de calidad, hojarasca y un fondo terroso-mineral de enorme complejidad. Muy borgoñón.
En boca es un espectáculo. Graso, puro, esférico, con una estructura alucinante. Fruta y finos tostados del todo integradas aportando un tanino acariciante, con un deje dulzoso de mucha calidad. Pulido por los años pero lleno de vida gracias a una acidez cortante sólo vista en el 73 y 85. Mucha fruta, mucha elegancia y una profundidad que lo sitúa entre los mejores vino que hemos podido probar nunca. Apabulla en todos los sentidos.
