  • 2008 Hagafen Syrah Reserve Prix Vineyards Napa Valley

This was just amazing Syrah, kosher or otherwise. Bold spicy fruit, olive brine, very exotic. No Cabernet for sure. Super seductive and aromatic. The last reviewer must have drunk this too early! In my experience, Hagafen Syrahs are their top varietal.

  • 2002 Château Margaux

A great Bordeaux and more evidence that 2002 is underrated. Having recently had the 2000 and 2003, this impressed me more. It is certainly more elegant and leaner, but had great aromatics, and a very satisfying palate. Initially there was a lot of oak and it was tannic and short in the finish but over the night, that aerated out, providing a nice finish with some umami notes. This wine is definitely not heavy on fruit and leans more towards oak, cedar, cigar, roasted nuts/coffee, and sweet vanilla, though there is red cherry in there too. For me the set of notes reminds me of a 1990 Montrose or 1982 Latour, older school style, leaner, masculine, but with endlessly soaring aromatic that make it hard to put down.

Although it has some years to go, I'd push to drink now, with a short decant if you just like fast-forwarding to the peak. I'd rather not chance that the fruit and smoothness will expire leaving a more tough and unforgiving wine.

  • 2008 Cavallotto Barolo Bricco Boschis

For my taste, this has come around and was quite enjoyable right away. This Barolo successfully combines the aromatic intensity of Burgundy with the long caressing finish from Nebbiolo’s greater tannic structure. The nose shows the typical red fruit, roses, and tar notes, with good richness but not the bulky oakiness of some modernists. I could see more aging but no harm to open now.

5/9/2020 2:29:00 AM - Dear Bordeaux_Jon, I Agree with you about the age of drinking Chablis (specially the 2011 Dauvissat La Forest). Greeting, FransS

1/24/2020 3:59:00 AM - Well, in fact there are Syrah reds that I've given scores of 96 or 97 to, but just the same, your comment makes a valid point. I guess that for my palate, pure Syrah is rarely as great a wine as a GSM blend -- I think that the best Syrah can't be allowed to overripen, but it makes the wines rather tart. If you let the grapes get more ripe to drop the acidity and sweeten the wine, it goes in the direction of blueberry juice and becomes dull and sweet and flabby, at least "often". So Syrah with Grenache and Mourvedre, or Carrignan, can work in hedonistic way that for me, pure Syrah rarely can achieve. Chave is unusual in doing wines that become incredibly good in a Burgundian style with 20 or more years of age, in good vintages. Some Chapoutier wines achieve that too. But this particular wine seems to be peaking, at least from my cellar, and never quite pushed through to that next level. So yes, I genuinely enjoyed it very much. But objectively, the score feels right to me for this particularly bottle. There are pure Syrah reds where I've gone with much higher scores, but this one just wasn't able to push through to that level!

12/2/2017 2:57:00 PM - Thanks for posting on my notes on 2009 Continuum. The peaking comment was in jest :-). It’s truly drinking superbly with an incredible amount of balance between tannin and fruit. We just had a 2006 and it still has a lot of legs

3/10/2017 12:04:00 PM - Thanks for commenting on the 1982 La Lagune note I posted. It's interesting that since then the wine has had a few more positive notes written. I think I will try to drink the other bottles with more experienced Bordeaux drinkers to see what they say and learn from them. Maybe it was bottle variation, maybe my palate does not appreciate mature Bordeaux. Cheers!
