As you see below I said the last bottle was better than the previous, but I must have had another wine in mind than the Fonroque, because I continued with 91 points. Go out and find this wine!

Absolutely better than the previous bottle, still unbelievably young, with crispy fruit (black currants), elegant supporting wood, a super fresh taste with a gentle bite and refreshing acidity and a balanced finish with ripe tannins and that is not always the case in the 2000-vintage.

Fun in the glass; the first day the wine showed crunchy red an black fruit and fresh peppers. The wine was even, after 20 years, a bit chunky and full of life. Day 2: the wine showed more ripeness, also elegant vanilla in the bouquet and the wine was more smooth and juicy. The body was more evolved and the aftertaste, still with vigour, was elegant with very eatable tannins; a lovely wine.

Coravin tasting. Seems a touch porty and also quite Rioja like. Wondered if this was affected by being the fourth access with a Coravin over past six months but then saw first note from October and last access in March: “Slightly Rioja like though, some sweetness, hints of oxygen and coconut but that’s probably just because this followed a Morgon Beaujolais and a Luxembourg Pinot noir.” (First Coravin access) “Ripe, mature, porty, correct but seemed so much more jammy and porty in comparison.” (third access) Both times compared to much cooler climate wines (Beaujolais, Burgundy or Luxembourg). At the time I put the portiness down to comparison with cooler climate wines but now even standalone it is quite ripe and porty. More likely to be bottle variation or just its maturity.

A lovely, deep and lively colour, a fresh fruit/acidity mix in the bouquet, close to juicy, also a hint of greenness and ripeness, perfect tannins; overall just missing the body and the zest to gain more points.

Coravin tasting. Classic claret. Nice oak, cigar box, cassis fruit. Very good. Slightly short finish but all you want from a mature Bordeaux. Slightly Rioja like though, some sweetness, hints of oxygen and coconut but that’s probably just because this followed a Morgon Beaujolais and a Luxembourg Pinot noir.

The wine looks light brown colored. The legs are medium. There is moderate sediment in the bottle. It tastes like raisin and fig. The body is full. The wine has leathery texture. The wine finishes long. The wine has medium acidity.

Like previous notes. Very classic claret. Takes a bit of time to open up, even with steak after an hour wasn't as good as after two to three hours of air after which it really opened up and nad a nice gravelly feel to it, yet still with plenty of fruit. Very good.

Beginning to come together, its flashy fruit and earthy undertones are pretty much between new and old world. It didn't hurt decanting this wine over a day, it became more delicate and smooth, the cassis fruit and plums became more pronounced and lifelike, the gravelly tannins still stayed and dried a bit. On the whole a terrific bordeaux, try now and in 3-4 years time - I am sure there will be a noticeable difference.

Still so young. Mainly creamy blackcurrant at the moment with some slight tanginess and a faint hint of gravel/pencil lead. Good but more about potential right now I think. Drank with some cheddar and a slightly industrial gouda.

Decanted for 45 mins. Cork was in perfect condition, quite a bit of sediment. It seems tight and young. Some cassis but quite tannic. Could almost have been like drinking a 2008. Better with braised beef and later with some cheddar but this needs a few more years for my palate.

Cork was saturated and protruding, however wine was as to be expected. Still tight, decent acidity. Red and dark fruit, gentle oak, medium to full body. Needs more time

Didn't take detailed notes but remember it was a very good, classic Bordeaux. Plenty of cassis, gentle oak, complex, drinkable on its own and with cheese. It was still quite young. Plenty of life in it.

When I first opened, decanted and tasted this wine, I thought I had waited too long to finish the last of the six bottles I bought when they were originally released. It seemed thin inner than I remembered and without much of a finish. About a half hour later, this Fonroque really opened and blossomed. An excellent example of a very good St. Emiilion. No, it's not Ausone, Chevel Blanc or Figeac, but it was and still is 1/4 of the price for a wonderful bottle of Bordeaux.

Needs a little time after opening but plenty of fruit, a little chocolate and earthiness. Tannins evident but fairly fine. Highly enjoyable, a good buy at comfortably under 20 quid.

Fresh, fruity, clean. Still a little coarseness to the tannins but there is plenty of ripe cherry and some cassis. Then a little chocolate and coffee. When this rounds out it will be a little corker. Note: it didn't offer much on opening - needed an hour or so to open up.

A very good wine, powerfull, maybe a bit chunky, but with good fruit and a nice balance. I think the wine will have no more development; drink now and the following 3-5 years. That's enough time to finish my dozen bottles.

You can feel the ripeness of the 2000 vintage. It is round and polished, some fruit and berries left, leather and cedar wood coming in. Rather short finish though.

Wow, and again wow, this wine is full of fruit and freshness combined with a deep and very lively colour. The overall impression: a young and balanced wine with all the components on the right place. After two days in the fridge this wine still showed very well and fruity. Count your blessings if you have some bottles ( perfect P/Q).

At La Rochelle, Omotsando. Very good wine with almost a full farmyard of animal smells in the most positive way. Went very well with the dinner. Had a dry side that I found a little alarming, but nevertheless a wine that is enjoyable and promising for the future.

Half of the bottle decanted 2 hours before drinking. Color shows first signs of aging. Nose: cherry. Again an example of the magic 2000: dark fruit, hints of chocolate, elegance, power, acid and lots of nice tannins. This is a magnificent wine, with a long live to come. An example of a wine perfect to drink now, but when you prefer smoothness and elegance this wine will come to you more and more. A balanced wine with tension! When you drink now (I will do it again in the next year), decanting is a must.

Did not decant. Deep red, ruby. Stewed red fruit, orange peel (?), leather, eucalyptus, mint. On the palatte luxurious, well structured, complex layers of fruit at first, then the tannins cut in, great length leaving the mouth tingling and wanting more. Wine imporves with opening (should decant probably) and went great with steak. Still has a few years left I would say but drinking well right now.

Decanted before starting dinner, first sniff suggested that there was no one home. Somewhat disappointed I made our dinner while thinking about a back-up. 90 minutes later this had all changed and I was greeted with complexity, coffee, cassis, leather, cigar box, pork rinds and a few other things that escapes my memory. The taste still had lots of tannins, good fruitiness and a long spicy finish leaving my mouth tingling. Great with striploin and scalloped potatoes. Like il_diavolo I wish I hade some more bottles.

A lot of vanilla as well in the nose as well as the mouth. Sweet bitterness. This wine is much too young now, but definitely has a future. Blind tasting it I thought it was a 2003.
