Burgundy For Lunch Bunch Holiday Event 2023 (Phoenix, AZ USA): Pure, complex, beautiful with beguiling spice. Served blind, I was shocked on the reveal as I thought this was about a decade older. A special vintage for this legendary wine. Can be enjoyed now, and will probably metamorphose into something different in time - although not necessarily better than the grand state it's in today.

Exuberant and complex wine. Rich, vibrant red berries and cherry, it’s deep fruited with well judged acidity. Complete, and drinking better than the 10 imo

Opened about 5 hours before. The nose consists of a mixture of wild spices, cherry, and a bit of oak. Muscular yet elegant, still in its early development. Quite meaty with lots of raspberries.

So perfumed, spicy and sumptuous. Great flesh and intensity. Berry and cherry fruit flavours abound. It is a big and powerful wine but in perfect proportion and possessing exquisite balance. Perfectly ripe tannins carry the extremely long finish.

La Paulée de New York Gala Dinner (Pier Sixty, Chelsea Piers - New York NY): Small glass, brief note. Massive and rich black cherry and plum with massive concentration. Not quite fully softened, there is still a lot of baby fat here, but this has the 95-96 point potential to someday (2024 or 2029-) be the best of the many Rousseau wines we opened tonight.

Drunk at Giando's Hong Kong - Served blind with Faiveley Beze and I'm afraid this had its a$$ kicked tonight. Much more experienced tasters than me have mentioned that 2009 isn't Rousseau's year so perhaps this wine is an example of that. In its defence the nose is powerful and the palate is very primary, certainly more youthful than its 10 years would suggest. Perhaps what we're seeing is a wine that is about to enter its awkward teenage years and was unfortunate to be up against an early maturer tonight.

A sweet core of fruit and more opulent than the Chambertin at this stage. It is luscious and velvety, with spiced laden red and black fruits that glide over the palate. There’s great depth here but also a lightness in the mouth and the long finish is carried by sweet tannins.

Wine Group Dinner #169 - 2009 Gevrey Chambertin Grand Crus (Urbane Restaurant, Brisbane): Wine Group Dinner #169, Urbane Restaurant. Another step up and an altogether lovely bottle of this regularly beautiful wine in so many vintages. The colour is a deep and dark cherry red with a great nose that is fine yet jumps out of the glass to reveal red and black cherries, wild strawberries, roses, allspice and hung game. The palate is rich and spherical with plenty of density yet a persistent fine line of soft fruit and balancing tannin. I love the sneaky line of fruit that goes on and on ! Terrific.

Domaine Armand Rousseau - Chambertin and Clos de Beze Dinner (Imperial Treasure Shanghai, Ngee Ann City, Singapore): Superlative. This was one of the best young Burgs I have ever had in my life. It was clearly the youngest, and tightest of the lot alongside its brother, the 2009 Chambertin, but this showed such great promise. The nose shad a bit of glycerol on it, but behind it, there were nice notes of dark cherries, berries, flowers, herbs and spice. A bit modern, but very attractive nonetheless. The palate clearly needs more time though. There was lots of bright acidity, along the finest, juiciest tannins, and then tons of luscious red cherries and berries, all still really tight and wound up. It was superbly balanced and wonderfully poised; full of power, yet with wonderful definition - but there is so much going on in reserve now. It felt a touch more modern in style than the other wines on show, but make no mistake - this was a mindbendingly good Clos de Beze. So complete, but 10 years behind its curve - it will be amazing wine to try when it hits it peak.

We decided to take an early look at this, and very happy we did. Delicious as expected, and like many 09's is very accessible. Don't hesitate to open one.

La Paulée de San Francisco - Gala Dinner (The Fairmont - San Francisco CA): Small glass, brief note. My first time tasting this wine. Rich black fruit with so much spice and melted butter textures. Very good power and length. Just hinting at everything good that will emerge in the upcoming decades.

From Magnum. Bright on the nose and wild. Very spicy red and citrus fruits. The fruit is so soaring and potent and high toned that I feel like it goes to the edge of the observable spectrum, and we are only seeing a fraction of it, like a star spectra that peaks in the UV. Now getting some coffee. Deep and sauvage and spicy on palate huge sour cherry and orange and peel. Long citrusy finish and sour cherry and minerals. Not as showy right now as the CSJ but great potential. Nose - 5.5-6/6, Palate - 5.5+/6, Finish - 5.5+/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1.5+/2 = 18-18.5+/20 (with 18.5-19.5/20 potential.)

This is young wine but delicious wine. The nose is showing some sarsaparilla from the oak as well as dense black fruits, spice and earth. It has great concentration in the mouth but is not heavy in the slightest. Waves of creamy fruits lap around the gums. There’s some Gevrey meat and earth just below the surface and there’s a gentle flex of sinewy muscle to the finish.

Rousseau master class 2009 (Daylesford 2015 PNWS): Incredibly complex nose showing the trademark cornucopia of magical aroma and flavour. This is a step up from all the other wines in the stable today by a significant amount with the Clos st Jacques being the next best. A brilliant wine that is utterly pointless in trying to describe. If you ever have a wine as brilliant as this you'll know what I mean.

Rousseau Chambertin Clos de Beze event; 9/11/2015-9/12/2015 (Capella Hotel Georgetown): This bottle is showing classic ripe style of the 09. Decadent nose displaying ripe dark fruits, blackberry jam, sweet spices, espresso, incense and a hint of licorice. Incredible concentration, silky and round, decadent jammy black fruit driven palate impression, perfect amount of acidity and lovely long finish. At the moment, it is not as enjoyable as the 10 which is perfect but what an incredible wine. I get often criticize of committing infanticide but the 09 and the 10 were the most enjoyable wines in this event.

Rousseau 2009 Horizontal Tasting: With a bottle last year that was almost impossible to live up to, this came close but it does feel like it has tensed up a little bit, drawing away some of the superficial otherworldliness but leaving just as much interest and potential. That said, the longer it was in the glass the more it opened and flourished. There is licorice, oak, spice and smoke combined with a dark floral touch. The palate is just as powerful as I remember it, with force and opulence, reigned in by precise acidity. So, so close to the last bottle but ever so slightly behind - it was incredible by any measure regardless.

97 + pts

Top 09 and 10 red Burgundy tasting (Capital Grill at Tysons corner, VA): I rated the 09 Chambertin 99 points in November and Jememy H whose palate I trust wrote that the CDB is even better. My experience with Rousseau is somewhat limited but I love the style, pure, expressive, warm, spicy and earthy. The wines are delicate and decadent with airy texture. Most delicate of the flight, also lightest in color. Raspberry essence, sweet and spicy spices, light caramel, limestone and earth. Incredibly airy plate yet intense and bright core fruits. The most delicate palate of the night, the red Burgundy equivalent of Chateau D’Yquem in texture. I originally rated the wine 99 but after tasting the La tache, I had to lower the rating. Perhaps I would have rated the wine 100 if drank at home. Demonstrating the clear flaw of the 100 point rating system.

Chris's Birthday at Black by Ezard (Sydney, Australia): This wine almost left me speechless. The aromas are exhilarating, captivating and unbelievably complex - shifting continually with every inhale - exotic spices, graphite, violets, smoke, tobacco and game. The palate has force through powerful fruit and tannin but there is superb precision and depth to the fruit as well. An incredible wine, maybe the best young red Burgundy I've ever tasted.

Had an engaging waft of ginger spice on the nose coupled with sweet cherry aromas. The dense sweet cherries gathered at this wines heart and it had a little underlying meatiness.

Deep pitched, black fruits, confiture, spicy and some oaky sarsaparilla notes. It is dense and sweet with incredible power without being heavy. It finishes long and sweet with sugar coated tannins.
