Bright deep ruby. Lots of blackberry fruits, some purple plum. Touch of perfumed pot pourri. Decent acidity. Elegant. Definitely a touch of St Joseph or Crozes about this. But maybe not such great value at UK prices, suspect pretty good at USA ones.

Good, not great CA Syrah. Admittedly, the wasn't blind and I have a slight bias against Randall, but the wine showed a touch of earthy, game, round dark fruit, a touch of bacon-like cooked meat and mild tannins. A fine wine for Tuesday.

Stars of the Melbourne Wine and Food Festival (Prince Wine Store - Bank Street): A very herbaceous and intense nose, with leather and currants. The palette is chock full of dry tannin and backed with very ripe berries. Even though it has a few years on it now, is still really racy and the mouth feel is quite grippy, so some food would be a good idea. Ideally cured meats and some pickled vegetables.

Clear, deep garnet. Smoke, olives, anise on the nose. Earthy and tannic, but a little empty on the palate. Finish is nice and long, if simple. A wine I like to smell more than I like to drink, but still nice at this price point.

Huge nose that fills the room. Pallette doesn't quite back it up. Good, just lacks a little backbone, could use a touch more balance towards the finish.

(13.5%) A fantastic nose this one shows nice plum and blackberry notes with black pepper, earthiness and hints of acidity. It starts juicy on the palate with dark fruits before a firm mineral backbone emerges that shows nice acidity and dries out the mid-palate. From there the finish turns leathery, showing licorice notes and vibrant tannins which linger nicely. This one feels big on the palate but has a cutting acidity which makes it lights on its feet. A food friendly offering that may mellow with some more time in the bottle (or in a decanter) but if you open it sooner rather than later lamb (or wild game) makes an excellent pairing.

Made from 100% Central Coast Syrah, this is a very French-style wine with plenty of earthiness, white pepper and liquorice. Always a good bet and always good value.

extremely restrained nose. i think i found some dark fruit with some effort. almost as restrained on the palate. dark fruit and a bit of tannin in a very heavy, clunky, gloppy, bland ACME kind of way. i was extremely unimpressed with this.

Very good nose: dark fruit and pepper, mainly, but some other components also. Inky purple color. Very concentrated, with a thick mouthfeel and tannins that coat the palate. Long finish. Quite complex and interesting. This is a very nice syrah, especially at this price point.

Blind Comparison Tasting (Folin Cellars Carlton Tasting Room): Brett, barnyard predominate the red and blue fruit notes. Bitter leather, over extracted fruit and sharp anchored finish, this was overdone and one-dimensional.

Violets and floral notes along with berries on the nose. Medium bodied palate is more meaty and savoury.

Mouth blackberry, front of mouth phenolic grip, meaty biscuit, slight yeast and oxidation...mouthfilling. it's a bit dirty but this is not an issue for me.

No notes. Pleasant, conservatively fruity (dark and earthy), ready to drink. Good food wine, and especially well suited for burgers.
