  • Drank it a restaurant. Took about 90 minutes of decanting for it come fully to life. Very herby and peppery with a cherry and currant nose. Moderate body. Ended up being very enjoyable.

  • Not showing very well. still trying to coax the wine out, been open for 1.5 hours so far. Getting some pepper, wood, and dense dark fruit. A little woodsy, some granitic minerality. Would be nice if the wood sank into the fruit a little better, either needs time or the fruit isn't quite strong enough. Still decent, not sure if the issues are from the wine just not showing well now or 2008 being a rough year.

  • Similar to past bottles. Full flavored, silky Saint Joseph that is filled with dark fruits and spice. Robust and refined (as in not wild). (93)

Belle robe ruby sombre, jambes voluptueuses.

  • Appearance: Bright and clear, it has deep ruby color, with fading rims and legs.
Nose: Clean, with medium intensity aromas of black fruit of dark cherries and blackberry, oak notes of cedar, pungent spice of licorice and pepper, sweet spice of tarragon, animal notes of smoked bacon. The wine is still youthful.
Palate: Dry with medium acidity, the wine has medium (+) tannin of ripe and silky texture, medium alcohol and full body. It has medium (+) intensity flavors of black fruit such as dark cherries and blackberry, oak notes of cedar, animal notes of smoked bacon, pungent spice of pepper and licorice, kernel notes of cocoa. The wine has a medium (+) finish.
Conclusion: Very good quality St-Joseph, the wine has a reasonably intense nose of good complexity though still quite young, and the palate shows the potential of a good wine with the balance and harmony. The acidity and alcohol is well in synch with the flavors and body, not like the New World Shiraz which may be overpowering in certain aspects. The finish is quite long, but overall quite too young for it to truly shine, and would be better if allow to age for another 3-5 years.

  • Wow this is just a terrific wine, still quite primary but wonderfully expressive, there are notes of dark cherry, floral perfume elements, subtle cured meats on the nose, similar palate which is quite smooth with a nice mineral rock component with a really nice smoked bacon loaded finish

  • 'Found' this tucked in my collection with no recollection of purchasing.

Lovely wine, with a floral peppery nose. Tobacco and some smoke. Very smooth, well integrated tannins. Good length.

  • This features a nice, appealing nose. 100% new oak for 36 months is evident but surprizingly starting to integrate. Complex. Black Pepper, smoke, capers, blackberry/plum fruit that is slightly confected. Briney palate that is fairly well structured. Probably wont be super long lived but will undoubtedly be better in 3 - 5 years.

  • Vertical tasting of Guigal La Turque (Esperanto, Stockholm): Nose with cherries, some dark berries, slightly sweetish fruit, a hint of tar, some spice, some oak. Medium bodied, palate with cherries, decent concentration of fruit, rather good acidity, medium but slightly hard tannins. Young, 88-89+.

Also in this case a good wine in a difficult vintage, showing a lighter style in terms of concentration and slightly harder tannins than usual.

  • Guigal Masterclass Stockholm, 8 vintages of La Turque: Great stuff!
    Best Saint Joseph I’ve had.
Nose : Full of white pepper and some animal tones.
Palate: Soft, well integrated tannins, long and full, with good acidity!
    Great stuff!

  • Dried spice, tarragon, light pepper, red fruits; rich good extract, touch of tar and licorice-anise; very tannic, a bit coarse, but built; great structure, will age well. Special St. Joe. Across the river from Hermitage.
