Ian's Birthday Piedmont Extravaganza: Kicking off the reds. I have enjoyed the 2014 of this recently but not had this old a vintage. On the nose dried aged roses, dark inky cherry alongside a little lifted pomegranate, old leather rand salty minerality. On the palate this is silky with sapid inky dark cherry and a little black tea. Long refreshing finish. This was a good start but suspect these should be drunk sooner vs later

Ian's Piedmont Extravaganza (Noize): The first sniff of the evening's first red had me slightly worried... are these amazing bottles going to live up to expectations? Luckily, all the others absolutely did, but (although others liked it more) I found this Roagna a bit tired on the nose, which had quite a bit of balsamic VA and a slightly oxidative note of coffee. On the palate there was elegant acidity, quite a bit of tannin and a lovely long juicy finish, but also an underlying fecal note. A shame.

Ian's Piemonte Celebration Dinner: Rich nose showing leather, old books and decaying red fruits. Silky but with drying tannins and further into its tertiary window than one might have expected.

Darker ruby garnet. Nose of musky tar, plum, rose petal. Layers of softened red plum, strawberry, tar, and stone on the almost tender palate. Moderate acidity and smoothed tannin. Longer finish of red fruit, crushed rock, and sweet tar. Splendid with grilled steak covered with mushrooms. Half bottle consumed at Paisano Village, Terlingua.

Opened 1 hour in advance but not decanted. Mature, balanced and pretty elegant. Medium+ tannin and acidity, both beautiful integrated. It delivers ripe forest strawberries, cherries, violets, an earthy tone and medicine cabinet. Good length and aftertaste. The acidity and tannin allows one to save it further, but if you prefer the fruit and freshness to have a significant place within the experience, you might start drinking your bottles.

Rusty strawberry ruby. Nose of violets, strawberry blossom, faint tar, earth. Layers of tar and earthy plum with resin and a bit of sweet tobacco on the palate. Still-fresh acidity and resolving tannin. Longer finish of tar and blue plum fruit with depth and harmony. Half bottle consumed on the foothills of Mount St. Helens.

Bricky scarlet garnet. Subtle nose of strawberry, damp cellar, blossom, asphalt, a bit of black pepper. Layers of tar and strawberry fruit on the elegant palate. Grippy tannin and freshening acidity. Longer finish of red sweet fruit and earthy tar. Young but stamped with classic typicity. 375 ml. Paired with superb pasta dishes at the Modern Hotel, Boise.

Clear red with a slight rusty edge. Beautiful in the glass. Grows with air and really sings after 30 minutes or so with gorgeous cherries, roses, rosehip, paint box, leather, tar, spice and herbs. Deep and refined nose, complex and long. Traditional, classic. Same notes on the palate. Great acidity and fine tannins of highest quality. Still young and kicking, got lots of time left and huge potential. Still it drinks great already, I'd say it has reached an early maturity phase and when to pick is simply down to your preference and taste. Long aftertaste with roses and cherries. Develops and grows during the night and to no ones surprise the last glass is the best.

This wine is singing and is a prime example of what a good Piedmont Nebbiolo should taste like. Our compliments to Luca Roagna. The nose was full of cherries and spice that were reflecting the tastes on the palate. The fruit flavors and spice were beautifully complemented with med+ acidity and soft tannins. Very sad that we drank our last bottle of this vintage tonight.

Last bottle. Decanted shortly before consumption. Beautiful, harmonious nebbiolo with complex black-fruited nose and detailed balanced taste. Just lovely.

Transported 400 km by car, no decanting and insufficient temperature control (but great food) - and still very good. Quite spicy, berries, cinnamon, leather and some horse. Relatively light in the mouth compared to the following Burlotto Acclivi 2006.

Complex and compact on the nose with layers of nuances like perfume, rose hip, peppermint, ramson, paint, suede and chocolate. On the palate the wine is rather young with huge tannins and acidity. Really balanced and harmonic though and drinkable if you%92re not afraid of some resistance. A great wine with lots of things going on, yet really elegant and juicy. I would keep this wine a few more years before drinking it.

Just exceptional and may well be showing it's best stuff now. The nose leaves no doubt about the house style, uncompromising to say the least with plenty of barnyard, wild berries, earth, game, old oak barrel and licorice. Palate flows through with remarkable seamlessness and an excellent balance. Medium body with a long, long finish. Might be quick to mature for this type of wine but what an end result.

pop, splash decant and drank 20 minutes later. Somewhere between ruby and garnet. Great nebbiolo nose of roses, cherries, tar. On the palate this thing is still a tannic beast (at least in the first hour), and the flavors and color are starting to mature, faster than I would expect for a '04 barbaresco.. I think, unfortunately, that the tannins will outlive the fruit on this one. Kind of a bummer given the pedigree, vineyard and vintage. We'll see. 90 today, possible upside to 92.

Decanted an hour, and once again, a lovely wine, better than ever. I can see why Antonio Galloni might be worried about early tertiary development, for it has the hay notes of maturing red wine as a dimension of its aromatic fragrance which a tarry note prevents from being merely pleasant. But why worry when the wine is so eminently drinkable now? Today it even seems more substantial and young than I remember it, with good body, juice and noticeable tannins - fine food wine. -- Second half, from recorked half-bottle, drunk four days later after very short decanting and very cool: Seems to continue to put on weight, with more tannin and wonderful fragrance. I think I will let the remaining bottles rest for some years, if possible.

Lovely and full of multiple fragrances. Medium-bodied and with high acidity, not very tannic. Fine to drink now and good food wine. Close to the 2003 in quality, it seems to me.

First half, decanted 2 hours before drinking: Extraordinarily perfumed and floral and with hints of licorice and toffee. Smooth and silky on the palate. Not quite as impressive as the 2003, perhaps, but extremely nice now. - Second half, the day after: decanted one hour and accidentally slightly warmer (perhaps 18 instead of 15 degrees): more medicinal, less perfumed; more tannic and with more weight; great acidity in the last drop. Really good food wine now.

Half bottle, decanted for 3 hours. Medium ruby, unevolved. Piercing nose of anise and pine needles. Medium weight, in fact pretty dense and chocolatey for a Nebbiolo. Ripe black cherry fruit, scintillating acidity, no wood influence. This loosened and tightened up several times while we enjoyed it, suggesting that it is still at an early stage and well short of full maturity. Nevertheless, a delicious, refreshing drink now out of this small format.

Tasted in the cellar at Roagna's. A powerful wine in it's youth. Mineral, red berries, liquorice and hints of tar. Grippy tannins. An old school Barbaresco with a long life ahead. Beautiful!

Younger and more tannic and intense than the wonderful 2003. Fragrant and with a beautiful sweetness. Too young to be completely harmonious, but very promising. - The second half, poured into a half-bottle and recorked, was more harmonious three days later, in fact drinking wonderfully well.
