Ian's Birthday Piedmont Extravaganza: Kicking off the reds. I have enjoyed the 2014 of this recently but not had this old a vintage. On the nose dried aged roses, dark inky cherry alongside a little lifted pomegranate, old leather rand salty minerality. On the palate this is silky with sapid inky dark cherry and a little black tea. Long refreshing finish. This was a good start but suspect these should be drunk sooner vs later

Ian's Piedmont Extravaganza (Noize): The first sniff of the evening's first red had me slightly worried... are these amazing bottles going to live up to expectations? Luckily, all the others absolutely did, but (although others liked it more) I found this Roagna a bit tired on the nose, which had quite a bit of balsamic VA and a slightly oxidative note of coffee. On the palate there was elegant acidity, quite a bit of tannin and a lovely long juicy finish, but also an underlying fecal note. A shame.

Ian's Piemonte Celebration Dinner: Rich nose showing leather, old books and decaying red fruits. Silky but with drying tannins and further into its tertiary window than one might have expected.

Darker ruby garnet. Nose of musky tar, plum, rose petal. Layers of softened red plum, strawberry, tar, and stone on the almost tender palate. Moderate acidity and smoothed tannin. Longer finish of red fruit, crushed rock, and sweet tar. Splendid with grilled steak covered with mushrooms. Half bottle consumed at Paisano Village, Terlingua.

Opened 1 hour in advance but not decanted. Mature, balanced and pretty elegant. Medium+ tannin and acidity, both beautiful integrated. It delivers ripe forest strawberries, cherries, violets, an earthy tone and medicine cabinet. Good length and aftertaste. The acidity and tannin allows one to save it further, but if you prefer the fruit and freshness to have a significant place within the experience, you might start drinking your bottles.
