DR T̶u̶e̶s̶d̶a̶y Thursday Night Zoom Tasting (Vancouver, BC): Drank blind next to the 2008 Ramonet Chassagne-Montrachet Les Ruchottes. A bit fuller than the Les Ruchottes yet still lazer focused. Tart lemon, tangerine peel, with plenty of salinity. More depth on the palate with a nice spicy core on the finish and a touch of spearmint. At first this was tight and not giving a ton but as it sat in the glass the nose really opened up and became my clear favorite overall. Great tension and intensity and judging from this bottle just entering it's drinking window. A great flight to start the evening.

Medium yellow-gold color. Aromas of green peach, pear, apple, melon, and some floral/melon. Palate has honeysuckle, mint, apple, and some hints of butterscotch emerging. Comes off as a muscular rendition with good acid balance keeping it in line. Love it. More development possible from here, but starting to be really compelling for my tastes. Drink or hold.

Brief notes of Christmas wines with John: Brief note. Served non-blind. A 'greenish' seeming nose of Granny Smith apples, limes and lemons, minerals and baking spices. In the mouth, driving 2008 acidity, which I liked. Good weight and power. Phenolic with a touch of apricot kernel bitterness. Greengage plums, limes, nectarines, soil and chalky minerals. Oak and sulphur well integrated. No hint of premox. Drinking well now but with years ahead of it.

Wine Enjoyed with Food Prepared on the Big Green Egg (Chez Shaffer - Highland Park IL): From magnum. Peach and nectarine aromas with subtle spice Bolder cross-section of flavors include ripe apple as well, all helped with lots of acidity and minerality. Very good balance. No surprise, this was better and fuller 30 minutes after opened vs when initially popped-and-poured.

wow, so much going on here, really rich with all sorts of elements on the palate -- lemon, peach, spice (not clear it's from oak though), caramel, smoke, minerals... sorta like no other wine i'd ever had... on night one it was a bit too much and perhaps disjointed... on night two it was great and the acid had taken it's rightful place to give it edge to balance the flavors

Daniel's bachelor party. A little seepage caused me some concern but bottle was sound. Light yellow-green colour. Nose of sweet stone pit fruits, matchstick, that was very deep and complex. Palate was filled with ripe peaches and minerals, and a long full finish. Class of the flight. Outstanding wine.

Loads of lime on the nose with oak spice and white flowers. In the mouth this was beautiful and offered tension from entry to finish with white fruit and lime flavours. There’s great acidity, which along with the tension, balances perfectly with the polished and graceful mouthfeel. As this sat in the glass the lightest note of vanilla added more complexity to the nose. This showed more like a 2010 than a 2008. If you are worried about premox there’s no shame in drinking this now, but I would imagine this will develop into something even better 3-5 years from now. Excellent. 92+

Dinner with Monthly Group at Park Palace (Park Palace, Grand Park Hotel): Once again, this was a lovely 1er Cru - very complete and absolutely delicious without quite having any Grand Cru pretensions, it started with a rather expressive and inviting for such a young wine, with gentle notes of vanilla and clotted cream, suggestions of white fruit, some lemony scents, a waft of white flowers and a little minerally undertone. Really quite pretty. As with the last bottle, I found this to be a very sleek, elegant, polished wine, with superb balance in the way of brilliantly integrated acidity to its pretty flavours of white fruited apple flesh, lemons and flowers. Well-proportion all the way from head-to-toe, this was a study in poise and focus all the way into a round, open finish, where subtle notes of spice and mineral mingled with a little creamy accent. Delicious stuff. Good now, but it should be even better in 4-5 years.

Blind tasting. Pale hue. Nice first nose swat on Clementine, freshly pealed ,zesty, pineapple. Mouth fresh and sharp, on kumquat, mineral as a Chablis, ending on white pepper. A very good Chassagne, really less oaky than other cuvée of this producer. Excellent and a bit to young.

Desmond's Birthday Dinner (St Pierre, Singapore): I loved this wine - it is right up my alley stylistically and about as close to the platonic ideal of a good 1er Cru white as I come to for some time. The nose was subtle and complex, with light notes of roasted almonds and white flowers touched by a bit of musk, gentle wafts of red apples, some earthy mineral, and then a touch of spice. With time and air, more expressive notes of sweet white fruit and cream, along with a striking minerality rose to the fore - a gorgeous bouquet. The palate was equally lovely. It showed fine balance, with supple acidity winding its way through through lovely juicy apple flavours and a crunch of white peach layered with light honeyed tones on the midpalate. Always lithe, focused and precise, gliding into a gentle finish of lemon notes that tailed away with a floaty bit of spice and limestone mineral. Light-footed, elegant and so complex for a young wine, and opening up all the time in the glass. This had no pretensions towards Grand Cru depth, but it was quite a complete 1er Cru all to itself. Superb and drinking well young - this beat out a very good 2004 Carillon Puligny Referts on the same flight - but I would give it a few more years in the bottle to truly develop.

Pale straw. Strong, soaring nose of citrus pith and limestone. The oak elevage, malo and lees elements are swept away by the pure, penetrating, persistent character of the site and vintage. Although Vergers is among the more accessible Chassagne plots, the development of this wine over 90 minutes in the decanter left us all wondering how it could become more pleasing than it is today. A very fine showing.

Light seepage. Mineral and butter palate, just lacked aromatics. Finish was balanced and medium length. Good, but a little disappointing.

From MG.
powerful but extremely well balanced Chassagne-
More mature than expected but this is not unusual for 2008.
