  • 2007 La Ferme du Mont Châteauneuf-du-Pape Côtes Capelan

I had to rewrite this. I first popped the bottle straight out of my wine cellar. It was definitely past prime. No finish, leather, and dried fruit. Fully aware that lack of heat will close a wine down. However, this seemed different, just dead. As it warmed up and it opened up in my glass. Slowly, over a period of a half hour, it fully resolved into a mature, pleasurable tasting experience. The leather and dried fruit is still there, but it’s now accompanied by blackberry in both the nose and the mouth. Fresh black cherry show up in the mid pallet. The wine is definitely fully mature, but it’s not dead. I would not decant this. Nor would I hold onto it for very long. But it still has love and it’s fully resolved, into an enjoyable and integrated CDP. I have three more bottles in my cellar, and while it’s my son’s birth year (which I usually hold), I will finish them off this month. Thank you so our tracker reviewers, I wouldn’t have tried it without your input

  • 2006 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Poured from a 375ml. Initially the wine hard a barnyard nose and seemed bretty. Mouth was dried red fruit (plums and cherries). With 30 minutes in a burgundy glass the nose opened up and a mature and deep CDP was revealed. I don’t think it’s at the end of its life, but I don’t think it’s getting any better, at least from a 375. I would drink up if you have any splits.

  • 2014 Williams Selyem Pinot Noir Olivet Lane Vineyard

Purchased directly at the winery and held in temperature/humidity controlled cellar until opened. Last of 6 bottles purchased, least favorite, definitely past its prime. Still fruit but showing an underpinning of volatile acidity both on the nose and palette that interrupts enjoyment. This is going to get worse with age. Aside from the nail polish remover (I am hyper sensitive), raspberry and black currant on the noise. Mouthfeel is a bit dry, but muted cherry and bramble carries through. This was much better a year ago when I opened my last glass. Though I have to add this was drunk out of a bordeaux stem (brought it to a restaurant that didn’t have Pinot glasses). So that might have enhanced the flaw. Either way drink now!
