  • 2013 Bien Nacido Vineyards Syrah Santa Maria Valley

Fruits are at the tail end of freshness, starting to show prune and hawthorn characteristics, maintaining a charming intensity of aroma. Palate is pleasant, but slightly thin on fruit, a tad hollow at the moment. My bottle had a crumbly cork, but if it is indeed an accurate reflection of the wine, then the wine is unlikely to improve with further bottle age and should be drunk now.

Medium lemon at the core fading to a to watery rim.

Medium aromatic intensity, notes of ripe peach, lemon cream, green plums, parched grass, white flowers.

On the palate, the wine is dry, medium+ fruit intensity, high searing acidity, very prickly in nature, medium alcohol, medium body, medium (+) finish. This acid monstrosity from Nagambie Lakes shows very ripe potential, but I’m afraid I popped this bottle open too early. Given another decade, the acid will fade and the ripe fruit will evolve to reveal more tertiary notes and a creamy viscous mouthfeel to match. Alas, I can merely postulate….

  • 2010 Domaine Perrot-Minot Vougeot Vieilles Vignes

Domaine Perrot-Minot, Vougeot Vieilles Vignes 2010: Fresh red cherries balanced out with the fragrance of lush strawberries and raspberries. Faint notes of dry sandy earth permeates through the primary components. The entry is clean, with restrained fruits, followed by an intermezzo of racy acidity, bringing to mind tart red currants and sour cherries. A gentle vibrato of woody spice fades ever so slowly, giving a decent finish to the wine. Post 2005, it seems that Christophe Perrot-Minot has shifted his wine making style to a slightly lighter extraction which I love!
