  • 2012 Campogiovanni (San Felice) Brunello di Montalcino

Seemingly starting to enter an interesting drinking phase, this wine is beautiful.
The aroma is complex, with dark chocolate, dark berries, densely fruited, some black currants, dried cherries, coffee, coconut.
The palate shows tannins still very present, acidity likely to carry this wine for another decade or more, and likely to develop further as the tannins become less pronounced.
It’s dark fruited on the palate, black currants, some herb leading toward a Christmas mince pie, subtle mocha, and a pleasing length.
    92-94pts

  • 2012 Tapanappa Merlot Cabernet Franc Whalebone Vineyard

A beautiful Merlot Cab Franc blend, from a vineyard containing the bones of a 37 million year old whale!
On the nose, plum, blackberries, red fruit crumble, white chocolate and herb.
The palate shows a nutty chocolate dark fruit, with a nutty length of flavour, silky tannins, beautiful mid weight palate.

  • 2011 Château Giscours

Glass poured from Coravin 23 April 2020 at home.
If you’re going to drink this 2011 now, make sure you give it 4 hours in decanter. It needs time to breathe.
On the nose after 30mins in the glass it shows herbal red and black fruits, some mint, some graphite. But to me it just feels too restrained.
The palate is nice, a well made wine, a nice fruit core, no off-putting weight, medium+ tannins, a touch of chocolate sprinkle, but not a lot else.
I had a glass a month ago which I left for four hours. It opened to become more ‘dense’, but I think this wine needs more years, unless the fruit dries out. Which is a risk.
