  • 2016 Philippe Colin Chevalier-Montrachet

Spicy nose, some alcohol, an impression of richness and concentration. Reductive elements, herby/stems, mineral pools! Fresh. The reduction blows off and now olive and olive oil (grassy), become more delicate, fine, and precise.

Ripe but contained on the palate. Stony and pure, bright and very clean cut. Savoury.

Later: chamomile and honey, tea... palate has a sort of GG Riesling quality that honey/oily and creamed nut turn.

I like it. Drank very well, but does it feel special?

  • 1999 Penfolds Grange

    PNP
Near opaque appearance, youthful ruby/purple rim.

Cool nose. Perfumed blue/black fruit, sandy spices, coal, new leather, mint, old books... some vapour but it feels fresh and pure... and elegant.

Full-bodied, pretty silky and svelte with a red frame and notes of sweet liquorice. There is a creamy silkiness, a sweetness, some toast and starting to show some development to the fruit. Elegant.

    On return:
Nose carries a sweetness to the leather, a little raisin perhaps? delicacy and lift.

Palate shows surprising elegance, it feels a little front-loaded and finesses quickly. There is concentration without feeling heavy, some salinity and savoury notes, a prettiness too - sweet candied liquorice, sweet fruit.

    Later:
Darker, more leather and spice to the nose, dried notes (still sweet though), whiff of alcohol, good purity and freshness. Dark flavours, red too, elegance persists.

  • 1999 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Meursault 1er Cru Charmes

Opened and left in bottle, then cooled again to be brought out later.

Golden appearance but no signs of premox.
Silky and fresh without being especially bright on the nose. Hints of wax and nut, honeycomb. There is a cool freshness and an elegance.

Good volume, some nut and nougat flavour, ginger - burnt biscuit, manzanilla salt and nut on the finish. Feels plenty fresh, nice acidity a little burnt hair/roasted-salted nut length... Elegant and delicate.

    On return:
Some light butterscotch to the nose, butter, good lift and freshness. Some alcohol. Barest hint of burnt hair (seems to be getting cleaner as it breathes), cream, mineral pools. Clean.

Palate shows a broad silkiness, a certain voile feel; cool and quite open (hollow?), feels fresh then back to the manzanilla salt/nut thing.

Doing well later, nutty, salty and surprisingly lean, tense in part and airy.
