The problem with having an opportunity to drink a wine like this is that one envies those with stupefying cellars who can do so whenever they wish. And I so dislike envy, one of the seven deadly sins. The `96 Cerequio is almost perfect: plush, profound and so unlike ordinary Barolos that commonplace descriptors do not do it justice. However, I must point out the one issue I had with this bottle: I believe it was still too young.

Part two of a personal 1999 Hayne weekend festival. The Zinfandel has been reviewed, now for the Petite Syrah, famously labeled a "50-year wine" by Parker. Well, it sure can't be called that after a few years in my cellar. Pitch dark, as though it had emerged from the center of the earth. Bouquet muted, terse, with hints of juniper and black currants --- slight hints. No improvement on day two. Certainly sound, in the same way a block of granite is sound. Drinkable, if you are uninterested in subtlety or complexity.

Part one of a personal 1999 Hayne weekend festival. The Zinfandel came first, later the Petite Syrah. Astonishing, and not at all as expected. No decanting, no waiting required. Perfume of plums and red raspberries immediately met the nose, rather like Baryshnikov leaping from a bottle. Dark, as expected, but smooth, soft, the texture quite fine, more in common with a pinot noir than an everyday zin. Absolutely incomparable. Marginally better after two hours, but no additional notes, because too soon it was gone. Surely the most magnificent 22-year old zinfandel ever produced. .
