2016 Wagner-Stempel Siefersheimer Riesling Vom Porphyr Trocken
7/3/2021 - Jan J Likes this wine:
Notes of spontaneous fermentation, orchard fruits, lemon, and minerals. Nice creaminess on the palate, great purity of fruit, and high deliciousness factor. This is the one to drink while your GGs are aging. Very approachable and smashable and ends on a nice savory note.

2019 Koehler-Ruprecht Kallstadter Saumagen Riesling Kabinett trocken
7/3/2021 - Jan J Likes this wine:
This wine is fantastic and probably my favorite entry-level Riesling out of all the ones I have tasted so far. Sourced entirely from the Saumagen grand cru site in the Pfalz (Koehler Ruprecht opted out of the VDP therefore even his Auslese trockens don't use the term GG even though technically they could be classified that way), left on skins for 12-24 hours before pressing and aged for up to 9 months in big old traditional barrels. All this lends the wine a patinated and textural feel. Fizzy peach skin, bread yeast, nectarine all make up an alluring and inviting nose. In the mouth, the wine is incredibly elegant and weightless, eminently drinkable and light. Great stuff for the price!

2016 Koehler-Ruprecht Kallstadter Saumagen Riesling Auslese trocken
7/3/2021 - Jan J Likes this wine:
I was thrilled to try this after a fantastic 2019 Saumagen Kabinett Trocken which was one of the best wine deals I can remember. The 2016 Saumagen Auslese Trocken is beautiful golden yellow, with a rich nose of honeyed orchard fruits, bread yeast, minerals, tropical fruits, brown sugar, and sage. Delicious with loads of dry extracts and very textural. A unique interpretation of Riesling that I found very compelling. My parents have a persimmon tree in their garden and we used to eat them very ripe. This is the first wine that really tied me back to that flavour - rich, silky, honeyed in a gentle and almost savoury way.
