  • 2009 Martinelli Zinfandel Vellutini Ranch

After three dreadful bottles of the 2008, I was more than a little apprehensive about the 2009. Immediately after opening, it reminded me of the 2008 - thin, disjointed and totally dominated by the 16% alcohol. An hour later, it was much better integrated and seemed to have gained some heft. At that point, it was all black cherries on the nose and on the palate (a good thing). Finally, after another hour, it started to strut. By then, the nose was dominated by freshly ground coffee, with some of the black cherries. Still cherries on the palate. It had become quite rich, with a serious finish. Not bad, but still a little weird and overpriced by about $20.

  • 2010 Venge Vineyards Scout's Honor

Opened about an hour before drinking. Red fruit and a lot of vanilla on the nose. Black raspberries on the palate. Quite rich, with a very good finish. Most notable characteristic: complete integration and seamlessness, from nose to finish. Least notable characteristic: complete absence of pepper, spices, bramble, or anything else that might indicate that it's (mostly) a Zinfandel. Very tasty, but no personality. Lack of tannins seems to predict a short shelf life.

If there's a lesson here, it's wasted on me (because this was my last bottle). The lesson is/was that this wine needs air and/or time in the bottle. Opened about an hour before drinking. Black raspberries on the nose and on the palate. Quite rich and viscous. Black pepper and various unidentified spices (not herbs). The fruit danced on my tongue (seriously) for 20 to 30 seconds after swallowing. Not at all hot, port-like, or raisiny. Terrific Zin.
