  • 1995 Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon Special Selection

Reading through the notes here suggesting great bottle variation being noted. Bottle level - low neck. Cork fragmented on removal despite use of a Durand. Nose - strong fruity aroma from bottle --> PnP to glass - beautiful nose of blueberry, blackberry, mint, with a hint of almond (marzipan), and leather. Color - translucent edge --> deep garnet color without bricking. Palate - Black and blue fruits, good acidity, but without a lot of complexity, beyond the fruit, to note on the palate. Mouthfeel - silky, with medium body, and with almost fully resolved tannins ( a touch of mouth dryness noted on finish). Finish is medium length. Wine at maturity with a few years likely yet to go for bottles remaining in very good condition .

Mid-neck level. Cork noted to be solidly in place, removed intact via Durand. Cork edge purple with no seepage noted beyond the corks edge. Slow ox for 2 hours and poured with an aerator.. Color- translucent edge leading to opaque garnet with a purple tinge. Nose noted to be complex with sense of sweet red fruit/strawberry, chocolate, sweet savory spice, with a touch of licorice and vanilla (no element of smokiness was noted with this bottle). The nose however, despite the complexity, was somewhat muted (?still a bit closed). Palate - Rich red/dark red fruit (predominantly strawberry and ripe cherry), with hint of chocolate, and savory herbs. Medium to full bodied, with lush-light- silky mouthfeel , and ending with mouth coating, but soft, tannins, Wine was easy to drink, with fresh acidity, elegance, and beautiful balance which improved with time. Started with an early 94/95 scoring which I brought up to 96 with time as all of the wines elements came together.

  • 1990 Château Mouton Rothschild

High shoulder level. Top of the cork, after capsule removal, required wiping down as some seepage was noted to have occurred. Cork disintegrated with removal , even with using a Durand. Wine was decanted/filtered through cheesecloth due to the fragmented cork and ample sediment. Initial nose was musty, taking about 45 minutes for the funk and mustiness to blow off. Nose- dark red/black fruit with tobacco , loam, and spice were noted. Color - pale--> ruby red with tinge of bricking. Palate - Dark red/black fruit with leather and spice. Mouthfeel was silky with a medium length finish and minimal noted tannins. Overall, was disappointed, as I expected a bit more, with this 'first 'growth' wine for this vintage.
