I will say that I was concerned for this bottle long before I opened it - it had a cloudiness to it that suggested premature oxidation or being too old, and while it wasn’t as bad as I’d feared, I think my concerns were valid; it just didn’t have the clarity or translucence of literally every other old Burgundy/other lighter old wines of mine when held up to intense light. My intuition tells me it was just a tad too old, hence the score and not marked as “flawed”, but given my relative inexperience with flawed wines (I’m privileged as hell I know lol), it could have been a touch premoxed as well. Cork was slightly colored but not too bad. I would check that and especially the cloudiness factor before buying if you can.

What? A 20 year old Chateauneuf from a not so great year at $30 drinking like a legend? I was shocked. But I’m telling you, this was consumed early in the evening so I was neither drunk nor palate fatigued and this *sang*. Flowers, thyme, bay leaf, red plum, dust, crushed rock, crisp blueberry, and a very surprising amount of elegance and fine weight on the palate. Gorgeous color. What a steal. Drink in the next 5 or so years though.

I will say that this wine was tasted at the same event as other red Burgundies that were either Premier Cru and/or from older or more heralded vintages, yet this village level Rouge was among the Wine of the Night finalists among me and my friends by the time all was said and done. Earth, cherry, barnyard funk *very* much on the good/pleasant side, minerals, flowers, impeccably aged and layered and beautiful. A wonderful value and discovery.
