Steve P's btl at our monthly Old Guys Lunch. From the controversial BdM scandal vintage of 2003. Other than a couple '01s I didn't start seriously buying BdM till the 04 vintage. I would have skipped '03 anyway based on its reputation for being overripe. So it was a pleasant surprise to drink this '03 and find it fully in my wheelhouse. And yet not surprising since Steve has a passion for Italian wines. Thanks Steve!

Opened and drank at night out for pasta at a nice Trattoria in Portland. Let breath for 30 minutes without decant. Drinking beautifully right now. Tannins well integrated and excellent fruit. Long, pleasant finish. Drank a bottle of the non-reserva last week (same year). Noticable improvement with the reserva.

Flash decanted then put back in uncorked bottle for 8 hours to slow-ox. Then decanted again for 2 hrs. Well integrated classic brunello. A little thinner than I remembered but nice fruit/leather/cigar box in nose and palate. I will drink my last one soon. I don't think this gets any better but should hold up for another few years if you want to hold.

There is plenty of life in this excellent drop. The tannins are vibrant but not overpowering. There is a good amount of structure although I must agree this is an example of a lighter Brunello. It may keep although is unlikely going to get better. Enjoyable!
