  • Popped and poured. Dried rose petals, potpourri, warmed raspberries and a grind of black pepper all evident on the nose. Red cherries, unsweetened fig jam and minerally soil in the mouth. Fresh, bright but with plenty of backbone. Tannins still present and this will continue to develop for a few more years with an even longer drinking window. Good stuff.

  • Day later from memory. Getting on in an evening when my limited tasting powers were far from sharp, so no detailed notes. The real point of this is to remind myself to not open another '05 1er Cru for a few more years.

I don't remember exactly where I heard of Aleth Girardin, but her last name resonates across the Burgundy landscape, and I assume there's some relationship to the big negociant, because there always is. Bought this back in a mad rush to accumulate '05's a few years ago, and it was my only bottle. I suspected it might be a tad too soon, so immediately decanted it against normal policy.

What I recall was a wine of elegance and harmony, with a lot in reserve. It was ripe but seamless, with that magic '05 self-assurance. It actually appeared to be closing down after an hour, but that could easily have been my brain. Would certainly look Aleth up again, though her wines don't appear to be in broad distribution in these parts.

  • Fabulous. Complex, integrated, subtle soft fruit rides along a firm structure. Long finish. Was peaking after about two hours.
