  • Good red still. This is holding up really well. Some earth notes on the nose but no marked sousbois and a lot of complex mixed red and darker berry fruits. Delicious on the palate. Excellent balance. Perfectly ripe - but only just. Tannin and acid in good proportion. And appropriate length. Serious but just a little pretty also. Hints of Volnay - but on the firmer side - more like Volnay Champans than Carelles. But that is the vineyard. Still kicking around the stall with something to say. Upside surprise, but for the fact that a bottle drunk a year ago was similarly good, though I am not sure why I would say that. Dominique made good wine back then too, and if the balance is good even less heralded terroirs can produce wines that last. A hour later, the oak showed up a little in the increasing sweetness, as it normally does for me. Bought on release.

  • I wasnt expecting this after 23 years. Still very present, and oak forms the backbone. Fruit faded with excessive swirling over time, so i am not sure further wait is needed. I truly enjoyed it although my experience with mature burgundy is very limited. As said below a big, strong wine with more purple than red notes.

  • Those not au fait with the Australian political landscape may wish to tune out now. The 1993 Comtes Lafon Monthelie-Les-Duresses conjures up images of Tony Abbot for mine, it is muscular and slightly aggressive but it is also trying to be tender at times, thankfully no images of budgie smugglers were conjured during the consumption of this wine. The similarities of this wine and our nation’s political leaders does not end there, as just like Julia Gillard, the wine shows upfront sweetness and pleasant appeal, yet the fruit is nothing like Ms Gillard as its anything but manipulated. All right, I’ll now cease the try hard election analogies, this is fabulous juice, highly perfumed with plenty of purple flower action, a palate that is lean and focussed and terrific cut and super structure.

  • Let me first disclose I prefer Lafon reds to his whites and this wine is a good reason as to why. This had that gorgeous perfume/purity that is Lafon's signature. Like high definition the detail is astonishing for this cru. Smoky cherry characters with a perfumed meaty edge make you want to dive in to the glass. The aroma rockets into the senses. The taste matches the nose and makes this one of the most rewarding bottles of mature Burgundy you could find.

  • Nice aromatics of forest floor, wet earth and red currants. It is crisp and vital in the mouth with small red berries and plenty of savoury/earthy nuances. It has the vintage’s tart whip of acid to the finish. A nice drink now with plenty left in the tank.
