A visit from Chris with David and Brian in attendance. (My house): This was decanted for seven hours prior to dinner and was only just opening up when served. I should have decanted it a day prior. A wonderfully complex nose of almonds, figs, and caramel. On the palate it was more of the same, yet I felt there was more hidden in this wine that further air will bring forth. I'm glad to have some of this remaining for further investigation.

Coravin Marathon with Tim, Ben, Michael (Wingtip): Nutty, oxidative. Delightful and complex nose. In the mouth, super nutty - unsalted roasted almonds, strong and persistent acid (high TA?). Complex mid-palate flavors of fruitcake, roasted almond, and dried orange peel.
Moderately sweet- 50-60g/L? Based on the oxidation, sweetness, and strong acid I'm guessing Madeira - Verdelho or Boal.
This is actually: 1983 d'Oliveiras Boal
From driest to sweetest: sercial - verdelho - boal - malmsey

I must say, this was a bit disappointing. Still a nice Madeira, but the power, length and breadth I would expect was not there. A bit of VA distracted. This was a pop and pour, so perhaps it will improve. UPDATE: On day 2, this remained pretty much the same.

From memory, not a note. Enjoyable, but a bit simple compared to other vintages from the same producer.

Similar to my last bottle. Pleasant nutty and caramel notes, but a bit subdued, lacking the depth and power this producer normally delivers.
