Rather funky, earthy aromatics; round, soft body, lean of fruit, waxy mouthfeel, wet sand, stone minerality flows through the finish. Hopefully the funkiness of the aroma blows off - could just be reduction.

Given the chorus of 90s for this bottle, and my general love of Vouvray and Chenin Blanc, I was a bit disappointed in this bottle. Not quite as rich as I hoped. There did not seem to be enough sweetness to offset the other flavors. Still a very good/excellent bottle, but just a little short of what I expected. Admittedly, the style is sec, so perhaps my expectations were not accurate/realistic.

My score may be a point or two high, but I'm somewhat blown away by this wine as it appears to be in its perfect drinking window. Excellent balance between chenin blanc fruit and acidity, the latter of which has largely folded into the body of this wine. A hint of resin on the finish keeps it long. 90-91 points objectively. 92-93 points for pure enjoyment.

(AUGUSTINS Vouvray SILEX) Weekend Vouvray Dear Friends, I had this wine last night and if you are a fan of Huet’s Clos du Bourg sec, I cannot recommend it enough. From an old-vine parcel of pure silex-based Chenin Blanc in the far northerly sector of Vouvray, this is a property on the rise and the miniscule production makes the wine not only highly desirable but nearly impossible to find (except in Paris or a few local restaurants in Tours). Over the last few months, I received several tips on this wine from my sommelier friends in Paris (“you better secure this - fast”) but I was not prepared for the mature level of winemaking nor the depth and complexity in this example. A true sec bottling (with very low RS), the 2008 Silex is among the very best dry wines produced in all of Vouvray in 2008. It has a wonderful and pure varietal sense aligned to a palate coating, mineral and lime infused back-end that rolls along for a full minute after the wine has left your lips. As it gains air, the Silex sparkles and comes alive with energy as an electric cut and texture begin to emerge that are hallmarks of top Chenin. The wine is just as good or even better on the second night (which is quite remarkable). A titillating effort from an unknown artist on the fast track... VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for exemplary price/value and opportunity to discover something special while it is still reasonably priced. Very much drinkable, albeit reflecting its age--crispness has receded, replaced by mellower texture and a bit of sweetness.
