[Decanted at 4pm.] Out of the gate, it has smokey cherries, fruitcake, and something floral in the nose. Silky in the mouth with a long finish of tar, roses, and soft tannins. A lovely wine that is probably at its peak.

This was a very nice aged bottle of wine, but not much more than that. Some bricking, clear edges, almost seemed cloudy. Very nice, balanced acidity, some older-wine (I guess one might call this tertiary) notes. Didn't wow me.

This was a stunner (but then again, when does Giacosa ever disappoint?) Layers of incredibly fresh red fruited flavours, more savoury mushroomy, tarry, earthy and higher toned herbal notes all coming together seamlessly on a very polished, medium weight frame. Power matched with elegance, and showing both a sense of freshness and plenty of tertiary development as well. Fantastic.

Poppy at Campania (Campania in Dallas, TX): Tasted non blind. Garnet color in the glass, slightly dusty looking. Slightly subdued nose of flowers, berries, cherries and a hint of leather. Flavors of red berries and red cherries. Medium acidity, medium tannins, medium body. Drink over the short term, perhaps into the medium term? 92?
